Olajuwon from Married at First Sight has certain expectations of his wife. And right now, Katina isn’t measuring up. The season 14 couple clashed over his demands that she step up her game when it came to cooking and cleaning in the March 3 episode of the Lifetime reality series. Ultimately, Olajuwon’s insistence that she wasn’t on a “wife level” had Katina in tears.

Pastor Cal from ‘Married at First Sight’ worried Olajuwon was stuck in a ‘time warp’

Olajuwon has made no secret that he wants a traditional sort of wife. Even before he walked down the aisle, he was telling his friends and family that he expected his spouse to provide home-cooked meals on a daily basis. But Katina isn’t much of a chef, preferring to eat out rather than spend time in the kitchen. The disconnect came up during their chat with Pastor Cal Roberson in the show’s Feb. 16 episode.

“I have a level for my wife and I expect like, ‘Hey, you cook,” he told the MAFS expert.

Roberson suggested that Olajuwon might need to adjust his thinking about how modern marriages work.

“Thirty, 40, 50 years ago, OK, fine. That was the way it was,” he said. “But I don’t want you to be stuck in a time warp.”

Olajuwon tells Katina she isn’t measuring up

Despite Pastor Cal’s suggestion that he let go of the idea that he deserved a 1950s housewife, Olajuwon is still insisting that Katina take on more household tasks. In the latest episode of Married at First Sight, he criticized the way she handled their housewarming party and took her to a cooking class so that she could brush up on her skills in the kitchen. He also said she wasn’t as accomplished as he was when it came to hitting certain milestones, such as paying off student loans and buying a house.

“When it comes to a marriage, some of these things are things that I expect to already be there. I’m trying to figure out if you have that base,” he said. He went on to question whether she had enough “life experience” to really be an adult.

“I’m trying to figure out what can my wife do independently, that I can say, on a wife level, I’m satisfied,” he added.

“If you don’t want to cook, what are you going to do? Are you going to clean?” he asked in a confessional.

Throughout their conversation, Katina visibly grew more and more frustrated with Olajuwon. Finally, she said she had to step away as she wiped tears from her eyes. It was a particularly notable moment because earlier, she’d confessed to her husband that she’d taught herself not to cry in front of other people. A verbally abusive ex-boyfriend would mock her when she got emotional, leading her to hide her emotions.

Some viewers were concerned about the way Olajuwon spoke to Katina, especially considering her past experience with verbal abuse.

“Katina RUN. She’s been emotionally and verbally abused before and he is already starting,” one person commented on Instagram

“She was just transparent to him about an emotionally abusive ex then he turns around and does the same,” another observed.

In the episode, Katina couldn’t hide her hurt during a teary confessional.

“I wanted to be married so much,” she said. “It just makes me feel bad.”

She got even more emotional in a teaser for next week’s episode. “It’s just his tone,” she says to Dr. Viviana Coles, another one of the show’s experts. “Like, I feel like someone’s beating up on me. It just makes me feel like I’m not good enough.”

New episodes of Married at First Sight Season 14 air Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on Lifetime.
