Another five couples are taking the plunge and saying “I do” to a complete stranger on Married at First Sight Season 14. But after last season’s 0-5 record on successful marriages, it’s hard not to wonder if the show’s three experts know what they’re doing when it comes to matchmaking. Case in point: Steve and Noi. These two Boston singles were matched by the MAFS experts. But there’s a big sign they might not be meant for each other.

Noi from ‘Married at First Sight’ Season 14 is looking for stability

Noi, who describes herself as a “hopeless romantic,” was born in a refugee camp in Laos and grew up in a family that didn’t have a lot of money. While they weren’t well-off, her parents did have a strong marriage and worked hard to create a good life for their family. Now, she’s hoping to find the same for herself – and make her parents proud in the process.

“I just want to be able to count on someone day in and day out,” the 33-year-old told Pastor Cal Roberson during the show’s matchmaking special. “And someone who wants to spend their time with me and create new memories with me.”

“She needs stability. She needs someone who can help provide stability,” noted Dr. Pepper Schwartz.

Steve doesn’t have a job

The experts matched Noi with the 38-year-old Steve. They felt he was adventuresome and intelligent, qualities that made him a good husband for Noi. But there is just one problem: He doesn’t have a job.

Steve was laid off during the COVID-19 pandemic and decided to take some time away from the workforce. Recently, he returned from a 4-month road trip and is still unemployed. The experts thought that wasn’t a huge issue, arguing that Steve could get a job if he wanted one. But even his family – who supported his plan to get married at first sight – thought that his lack of unemployment was likely to be an issue for his wife. So did many Married at First Sight viewers, including season 1 alum Jamie Otis

“Oh man … he doesn’t have a job …. hopefully she can realize it’s just a COVID thing and his stranger bride doesn’t freak out when she hears she legally married someone unemployed,” she wrote on Instagram.

“Can’t believe they just matched that sweet woman with Steve, he doesn’t have a job, yes, he said he could find one but not sure what he wants to do. They shouldn’t even let a person with no job apply. No way to start a marriage,” another commented.

But Steve seemed unconcerned that his employment status would be an issue for his future spouse. “There’s always ways to make money,” he said.

The ‘Married at Firs Sight’ experts think Steve and Noi have a lot in common

While Steve’s joblessness is a potential stumbling block, the show’s experts think he and Noi share plenty of other things in common, including a focus on family and a desire to have children.

Dr. Viviana Coles also felt the two would bond on an emotional level.

“We believe Steve can bring that kind of connection [Noi] wants so badly,” she said in the show’s Jan. 12 episode.

Will that connection be enough for Steve and Noi to build a successful marriage? Viewers will get a sense of where things are headed for the pair when they get married in the next episode of Married at First Sight Season 14, airing Wednesday, Jan. 19 at 8 p.m. ET on Lifetime.
