Martin Short Whispered These 4 Sweet Words to Selena Gomez on the Emmys Stage
Sure, they roasted each other at the 2024 Emmy Awards, but Martin Short and Selena Gomez also had a very sweet moment. Ahead, what Short did when Gomez felt like she was “about to fall” as they took the stage alongside their fellow Only Murders in the Building co-star Steve Martin.
Martin Short helped Gomez make her way to the Emmys stage: ‘I got you, baby’
As the Only Murders in the Building stars took the stage on Sept. 15, 2024, at the 75th annual Emmys, cameras caught a sweet moment between Short and Gomez.
The “Single Soon” songstress—and Emmy nominee (Hacks star Jean Smart ultimately took home the trophy in the Lead Actress in a Comedy Series category)—trailed slightly behind tuxedo-clad Martin and Short as they headed for center stage.
After all, Gomez had to navigate walking to the stage in heels and a Ralph Lauren Collection gown with a train. “I feel like I’m about to fall,” she whispered to her Short in a video posted to E! News’ Instagram. At that, Short grabbed his co-star’s elbow to help steady her, sweetly replying: “I got you, baby.”
Fans gushed over the exchange in the comments. “The uncles she didn’t know she needed ❤️,” one said. “They’ve totally become Selena’s r[ea]l grandpas and I’m all here for it,” another added.
The moment even got some love from the official Only Murders in the Building Instagram account. It came in the form of one word, “Olimabel,” a mash-up of Short and Gomez’s characters’ names, Oliver and Mabel.
Steve Martin, Gomez, and Short roasted each other at the 2024 Emmys
The awe-inducing moment was soon replaced with laughter as Short, Martin, and Gomez roasted each other. Short, 74, poked fun at Martin, 79, saying it’s an “honor to be working with someone who looks like he’s fallen and can’t get up.”
Martin fired back with a barb about “working with someone who looks like a former women’s tennis champion.” Finally, Gomez joked the two were quickly on their way to becoming “childless cat ladies,” in reference to J.D. Vance’s comment about Vice President Kamala Harris.
Gomez on Steve Martin and Martin Short: ‘They’ve changed my life’
Sure, they joke on camera and off, but there’s nothing but love and admiration between Gomez, Martin, and Short. “It’s a blast, isn’t it?” she told Vanity Fair after learning her co-stars made jokes on a Zoom call while being interviewed about her.
“It’s like the show! They’ve changed my life and perspective on tons of things,” the 32-year-old said. After years of working together, Gomez has finally joined in on taking a few comedic punches.
“Marty and I have a riff we just do naturally, which is to deeply insult each other,” Martin explained. “Selena was very polite for the first year. And then the second year, she started to get into it and give as good as she got.”
As for their friendship, “it just gets deeper and deeper and deeper,” Short previously said (via People.) “She is so lovely as a human, she’s so remarkable as a talent, and she just has an aura and this lovely spirit. Our friendship grows and grows.”
Martin and Short have also praised Gomez’s professionalism, especially her knack for punctuality. “[She is] always on time, [and] always knows her lines. So good, so talented, such a pro—it’s fabulous,” Short said.
