Marvel Leak: Everything the ‘Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness’ Synopsis Reveals
Just when you thought Marvel was done with the Infinity Stones, a new leak suggests that the Time Stone will play an important role in Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The new leak comes a week after the movie’s director, Scott Derrickson, bowed out over creative differences. Here is everything the synopsis revealed about Doctor Strange 2.
Inside the ‘Doctor Strange 2’ synopsis
Marvel has been very quiet about the plot for Doctor Strange 2, but inside sources have leaked several details regarding the storyline. For starters, we know that Wanda Maximoff, a.k.a. Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), is set to play an important role in the movie.
Wanda is appearing in her own show, WandaVision, on Disney+, and events from the series are expected to affect what happens in Doctor Strange 2. Other than that, we do not know much about the film – until now.
According to We Got This Covered, an insider got ahold of the official synopsis for the sequel and leaked it online. Marvel has not confirmed that the synopsis is legit, and even if it is, things could certainly change between now and when the new director takes over.
The synopsis talks about how Doctor Strange is resuming his research on the Time Stone after defeating Thanos (Josh Brolin) in Avengers: Endgame. It also teases that a friend will turn foe in the character’s second outing.
“After the events of Avengers: Endgame, Dr. Stephen Strange continues his research on the Time Stone. But an old friend-turned-enemy puts an end to his plans and causes Strange to unleash unspeakable evil.”
What does the synopsis mean?
There are several things to take away from the Doctor Strange 2 synopsis. The most obvious element is the mention of an old friend, whom some fans speculate is Baron Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor).
In the first film, Mordo lost all faith in the Ancient One and concluded that there were just too many sorcerers for his liking. His return was also teased in the post-credits scenes, which is why fans think the synopsis is about him and not Wanda.
We do not know why Mordo has turned evil, but he might have a point in stopping Doctor Strange from messing around with an Infinity Stone.
As far as unleashing evil is concerned, there has been a lot of talk about Nightmare appearing as the main villain in Doctor Strange 2. If the rumors are true, then there is a good chance we will Nightmare pop up first in WandaVision, as he is also linked to Wanda.
What about the Time Stone?
Another interesting aspect of the leaked Doctor Strange synopsis is the mention of the Time Stone. In Endgame, we learned that Thanos destroyed all of the Infinity Stones to prevent anyone else from using them.
Captain America (Chris Evans) also traveled back in time to return all of the stones to their original places. We have no idea how Doctor Strange got a hold of the Time Stone, but it definitely raises some interesting possibilities.
Considering how Doctor Strange is the Sorcerer Supreme, he could have made a new Time Stone with his powers or using a time machine to snag it for future use.
However he did it, it sounds like the Infinity Stones will continue to play an important part of the MCU moving forward.
A look at the ‘Doctor Strange 2’ timeline
The last thing to tease out of the leaked synopsis is the timeline of the Doctor Strange sequel. The statement says that Doctor Strange is conducting his research after the events in Endgame.
This means Doctor Strange 2 will not be set in the past, like Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow or Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel. Exactly how far into the future remains to be seen.
Production for Doctor Strange 2 is expected to begin this summer, though that could change in light of the directing change. Casting is believed to be ongoing, though Marvel has yet to announce anything on that front.
The next movie in the studio’s lineup is Black Widow, which premieres May 1. The Eternals, starring Richard Madden, Angelina Jolie, and Kit Harington, is scheduled to open in theaters in November.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits the big screens in the spring of 2021.
