Marvel: Mark Ruffalo Gifts Captain America Fans With the Best ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Reference on the Fourth of July
As Marvel fans celebrate the birth of Steve Rogers on July 4, Mark Ruffalo took the time to highlight a special moment involving Chris Evans’ Captain America from Avengers: Endgame. The actor behind Bruce Banner marked the holiday with a closeup of Cap’s butt — or as Ant Man’s Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) would call it, America’s a**. And basically, Ruffalo’s Instagram and Twitter posts inspired the real celebrations to begin.

As they say, history repeats itself. On the Fourth of July in 2019, Ruffalo shared a hilarious GIF of Evans in Not Another Teen Movie as he checked out a photo of Cap’s butt. Then Ruffalo kept the tradition alive this year.
When Ruffalo posted America’s a** on Instagram and Twitter in 2020, the Avengers: Endgame star simply posted a cropped screenshot of Cap’s backside. Then he captioned the pic with a peach emoji and wrote, “Happy #4thOfJuly.” Nothing more, nothing less. But even so, most Marvel Cinematic Universe viewers understood the reference.
In Avengers: Endgame, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) commented on Captain America’s wardrobe choices from 2012. “Mr. Rogers, that suit did nothing for your a**,” he said.
Then Scott tried to reassure Steve and delivered the kicker. “I think you look great, Cap,” he said. “As far as I’m concerned, that’s America’s a**.”
Later, Steve faced off with his 2012-era self and got the chance to settle the matter once and for all. “That is America’s a**,” he said.
Where the Captain America butt joke came from in Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Endgame’
In an interview with the LA Times published in May 2019, Avengers: Endgame screenwriter Stephen McFeely revealed where the joke about Captain America’s butt came from.
“It’s a little meta,” McFeely said at the time. “Chris Evans has never been comfortable with that outfit from the first Avengers movie. So in the rearview mirror, it’s a little way to wink at how that was then and this is now. And then it sort of just built from there.”
He added, “By the time we got to the fight scene where he defeated himself, his butt is on the ground and was just sitting there for a callback.”
Then when speaking with SYFY WIRE in October 2019, McFeely explained Cap wasn’t originally supposed to comment on his own behind and the scenes were filmed during re-shoots.
“We redid the Cap on Cap fight, the ending of it, and that helped us tremendously,” McFeely said. “And then we needed to get out of that scene a little differently. And there [2012 Cap] was, slumped on the ground with his butt in the air.”
Meanwhile, Endgame screenwriter Christopher Markus hinted Evans was satisfied with the final outcome.
“It’s rare that you can find a joke for Captain America to tell that [is] in-character as Captain America,” Markus said. “He doesn’t do a lot of non-sequitur smart remarks. So I think Chris is happy when you can get something funny that stays in the Cap wheelhouse.”
