Marvel News: Who Does Peter Dinklage Play in ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’?
Peter Dinklage is best known for his role in Game of Thrones. But in early 2022, rumors swirled of another significant role for the Emmy-winning actor — in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Thor: Love and Thunder.
In June, the story of the God of Thunder continues. Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, and Natalie Portman return for the latest entry in the MCU canon. However, though neither Disney nor Dinklage has confirmed him for the movie, there’s reason to suspect he’ll bring back his famous character.
Rumors circulate that Dinklage will reprise his role as Eitri in ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’
IMDb posted the credits for Thor: Love and Thunder, which included heavy-hitter A-list actors such as Matt Damon, Russell Crowe, Christian Bale, Chris Pratt, and Melissa McCarthy.
The site didn’t list Dinklage as part of the cast. Keen observers noticed, however, that his name curiously appeared in the Makeup Department credits. The site lists stylist Lane Friedman as “Hair Stylist: Peter Dinklage,” thus igniting a firestorm of rumors that the MCU is hiding the return of Eitri to the Thor storyline.
Sure, it could be an error, but those familiar with the MCU remain hopeful this means the character Dinklage brought to life in Avengers: Infinity War may be making a comeback.
Dinklage first appeared in the MCU as an Asgardian weapons forger
Dinklage made his MCU debut in Infinity War as Eitri, the dwarven king of Nidavellir. His character played a vital role, who, as a skilled Asgardian weaponsmith, was able to recreate Thor’s mighty hammer.
Mjolnir met its end in Thor: Ragnarok. Thor searches for the star that powers the forge to restore his abilities. In Avengers: Infinity War, Thor travels with Groot and Rocket from Guardians of the Galaxy in search of a new weapon.
Eitri doesn’t take kindly to the visitors at first. But after learning of Asgard’s destruction at Thanos’ hands, he reveals he forged the Infinity Gauntlet for Thanos while attempting to save the dwarves, who were all killed by the evil leader. In retaliation, Thanos turned Eitri’s hands to metal, rendering him unable to continue his craft.
While all looks bleak for Thor, the last surviving dwarf reveals that he still has the mold for the Stormbreaker hammer. As Thor attempts to refire the forge by tapping the power of the neutron star, Groot saves him, using his severed arm as a handle for the beloved hammer. Thor’s strength is restored, and Eitri’s job is complete.
What Dinklage says about returning to the MCU
CBR points out that in the upcoming film’s movie poster, Jane’s hammer features cracks. The site theorizes this indicates the weapon maker’s return, saying, “bringing Eitri back to the MCU makes sense, especially with an actor of Dinklage’s caliber in the role.”
According to Empire (via Digital Spy), when asked about his return to the MCU, Dinklage replied, “You’ve got to wait and see, don’t you? Maybe you will. Maybe you won’t.” He explained, “The Marvel spies are everywhere. What I love about those movies is their sense of humor, especially [writer-director] Taika [Waititi]’s movies. They’re so much fun.”
As MCU fans wait to see if the rumors are true, Dinklage keeps busy with other projects. He starred in the lead role in the movie adaptation of Cyrano. He is also working on The Toxic Avenger and Brothers, which are currently filming.
