Marvel’s ‘Eternals’ Looks ‘Different’ – Here’s Why Fans Think That’s a Good Thing
All signs lead to the upcoming Marvel’s Eternals movie being a departure from other MCU movies. Not only has very little been said about this movie, a major departure from previous Marvel movies that generated buzz, rumors, and spoilers years before their release dates, but the vibe of few official movie promotions, including the official movie trailer, feel different. Since the movie was originally intended for the start of the MCU Phase Four program, many fans can’t help but wonder if MCU planned to use the movie to set an entirely different tone for the Phase Four Marvel movies. The recent release of the official movie poster seems to confirm fan suspicions.
What to expect from ‘Eternals’
Marvel/Disney has done a remarkably good job of keeping a lid on the Marvel’s Eternals project. The general public knows very few details about the upcoming release. Fans of the comic book series know that unlike the more mainstream Hulk, Ironman, and Captain America, who are individuals who occasionally decide to assemble into the elite Avengers team, the Marvel’s Eternals are a group of characters who have been a part of something bigger for approximately 35,000 years.
The movie’s plot revolves around the group of Eternals as they fight a dangerous and alien force. BBC speculates that the villains will ultimately be the Deviants.
We also know that the movie features the acting work of Angelina Jolie, Kit Harington, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, and Salma Hayek.
The official poster
The interesting thing about Marvel Eternals is that even though the official teaser trailer has been released, it doesn’t reveal much about the movie. You see glimpses of different characters and what is obviously a spaceship, but otherwise, there are very few clues to the movie’s central plot.
The recent release of the official movie poster has been exciting. The poster is remarkably simple. It’s a list of the cast names, you see the bulk of the team standing in an open field, their backs to the camera, watching a spaceship as it approaches earth. The entire image is bathed in the golden light of twilight/dawn. The poster gives a sense of unity, togetherness, and control.
Fans hope that this poster for the Marvel’s Eternals, which has a radically different vibe than posters for the previous Marvel movies means that this next wave of movies will also have a different vibe.
“This movie already feels like it’s going to be different from what we’ve seen before in the MCU. Even tone-wise, it feels a bit different,” cbekel3618 wrote on Reddit. “I’m really happy to see Marvel experimenting more with these projects.”
“I think it’s because they finally have the luxury to be able to do so,” DragonStriker replied. “They’re an established brand. They know that whatever they do, there’s already a market hungry for it. Keeping it the same would just be a detriment, so why not switch it up.”
“Based on just the teaser trailer alone, I’m getting a mild sense that this one is going to be a bit divisive, in a way that Marvel movies usually aren’t.” added eltrotter. “It’s looking generally a bit more ‘sober’ and contemplative than what we’ve had previously, and I guess I’m partly being influenced by the tone of Nomadland here as well. I’m excited for it, I can’t wait to see something fresh tonally.”
When and where you can watch Marvel’s Eternals
Like most things, the COVID-19 pandemic corrupted the release plan for Marvel Eternals. The original plan was to make Marvel’s Eternals the second movie in the MCU Phase Four plan. With so many release dates and filming schedules getting disrupted, the new plan is to release the movie on November 5, 2021. Director Chloé Zhao promises it will be worth the wait.
“How much further and bigger can we go after [Avengers:] Endgame?” Zhao said during a THR interview, before adding. “Because I’m not just making the film as a director. I’m making the film as a fan.”
Hopefully, the movie will meet all fan expectations.
