Marvel’s ‘Hawkeye’ Trailer Teases the ‘Most Wonderful Time of the Year’
Marvel dropped the first trailer for its Hawkeye series, and the studio looks to be getting festive with the upcoming Disney+ show. Set to the classic Christmas tune “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” the new footage shows Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) navigating the holiday season — and a new apprentice.
What is Marvel’s ‘Hawkeye’ about?
Hawkeye is Marvel Studios’ fourth Disney+ series to arrive this year, and it continues the trend of setting up Phase 4’s new slate of heroes. Although Renner’s archer will be at the forefront of the show, he’ll train a new apprentice who will likely take up the mantle when he’s done with the Avengers. In that way, the dynamic is similar to that of Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) and Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson).
During an exclusive with Entertainment Weekly, Renner teased the relationship between Clint and Kate:
“[Kate is] a 22-year-old kid and she’s a big Hawkeye fan. She has a wonderfully annoying and equally charming manner about her, because she’s such a fangirl of Hawkeye. The relationship grows from that, but the biggest problem for Clint is Kate Bishop and the onslaught of problems that she brings into his life.”
Aside from the fact that Hawkeye will be training Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), Marvel hadn’t previously revealed much about the show’s plot. However, the new Hawkeye trailer gives fans an idea of when the series is set — and what the duo will be up against in the coming episodes.
Christmas comes early in Marvel’s first trailer
Anyone wishing Marvel would just come out with a holiday movie will find satisfaction in the new Hawkeye trailer. The series is very clearly set during the Christmas season, and it promises to show more of Clint’s family life. Given that he spent most of the Marvel Cinematic Universe hiding his familial relationships from his colleagues, the opportunity to see a new side of the character is an exciting one.
Unfortunately, the Hawkeye trailer suggests Clint will see some trouble on the family front. Just as he’s about to spend the first Christmas with his family in years, his controversial Avengers: Endgame past comes back to haunt him. While his wife and kids leave town, Clint is forced to stay in Manhattan and deal with the villains he’s brought to their doorstep.
He’ll have help from Kate Bishop. The Hawkeye trailer shows the pair meeting for the first time, and they promise to grate at each other in an incredibly entertaining way. With so many people after Clint, Kate will also prove a handy ally. After all, as she tells him, she is the “world’s greatest archer.”
When does ‘Hawkeye’ come out on Disney+?
With its Christmas themes, it’s probably no surprise that Hawkeye is coming to Disney+ just in time for 2021’s holiday season. Back in July, Marvel Studios announced the new show would arrive on Wednesday, Nov. 24. That means the premiere will kick off over Thanksgiving weekend, with the later episodes leading right into December.
Following on the heels of Loki and What If…?, Hawkeye promises to end Marvel’s busy year on a high note. One thing is certainly starting to feel true: It’s “the most wonderful time” to be a Marvel fan.
