Viewers are eagerly awaiting news on season 2 after the shocking finale of the Disney+ series Moon Knight on May 4, 2022. The series has quickly become a jewel in the already-glistening crown of Marvel episodic content due to its complex storyline and Oscar Isaac’s award-worthy performance as Moon Knight’s (part-time) leading man, Mark Spector. However, unlike other Marvel series like Loki that have been quickly renewed for a follow-up season, there is no news on Moon Knight season 2, leaving many to wonder if it will ever happen.

What is Marvel’s Moon Knight about?

Isaac’s character lives with Dissociative Identity Disorder. Throughout Moon Knight season 1, Isaac’s hard-nosed American character, Mark Spector, shares time with the mild-mannered British Steven Grant, and, in the gripping season finale, a third personality is introduced: the ruthlessly violent Jake Lockley. And though series director and executive producer Mohamed Diab claims that Moon Knight is not an accurate depiction of Dissociative Identity Disorder, Isaac’s performance as the troubled, super-powered trio is truly remarkable.

Why Moon Knight season 2 might not happen

There is currently no word on a follow-up season for the Disney+ series Moon Knight. However, in an interview with Deadline, Diab pointed out that “Marvel doesn’t go with a conventional way, so even if they like the character and want to extend the world, it could be season 2, it could be a standalone film, or he can join another superhero’s journey.”

By far the largest indicator of the show’s fate thus far may be that, following the conclusion of Moon Knight season 1, Isaac no longer has a Marvel contract. But as Variety points out in its interview with Diab, Marvel recently posted to Twitter referring to the final episode of Moon Knight season 1 as a “season finale” rather than a “series finale” lending further hope to fans.

Though Marvel’s Loki is still Disney+’s strongest Marvel series with over 2.5 million debut views, GamesRadar+ reports that Moon Knight tied with The Falcon and The Winter Soldier for the platform’s number two spot. This likely means that Marvel is seeking to continue Moon Knight in some form or another.

Furthermore, while it is unclear if Moon Knight season 2 will come to be, Marvel is rumored to be creating a story for Midnight Sons. The fresh team of supers is reminiscent of Marvel’s Avengers but with supernatural powers and features Moon Knight, Ghost Rider, Punisher, Blade, Doctor Strange, Morbius, and more. Little is known about the project thus far, however, and it is unclear if the story will arrive in serialized content via Disney+ or in theaters.

When asked about his future as Moon Knight and the possibility of Moon Knight season 2, Isaac has been notably non-committal. “If there’s any kind of future, I think it just depends on if people like it, if people want to see more, and if we find a story that’s worth telling,” Isaac told Variety. And when the actor was asked about Moon Knight’s possible role in Midnight Sons, the actor once again deflected, telling GamesRadar+, “The idea is really interesting. But it would have to be like, is there something interesting to tell about this character in that world?”

Reading into the actor’s comments, it seems like Isaac is open to the idea of continuing Moon Knight’s story if the story is worthwhile, which bodes well for Moon Knight fans everywhere.
