Here’s what we know about Simu Liu and his song “Hot Soup.”
Marvel star, Simu Liu, performed ‘Hot Soup’ for ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings: The Album’
Disney previously released albums inspired by its films. That includes The Lion King: The Gift, spearheaded by Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar’s Black Panther: The Album Music From and Inspired By. When Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings: The Album was released in theaters, it came with an original album curated by 88rising.
This production featured well-known artists like EARTHGANG, 21 Savage, and Anderson .Paak. It also included the star of Marvel’s 2021 release, Liu, on the 17th track, “Hot Soup.” Since its Spotify debut, this song earned over a million plays from fans. Even Liu tweeted that he was “vibing” to this soundtrack.
What is the meaning behind ‘Hot Soup’ from ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings: The Album’?
As one of the slower songs featured in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings: The Album, “Hot Soup” held sentimental value for the artist behind the song.
Genius describes “Hot Soup” as a song about Liu’s “parents and grandparents at home. Often making soup during the winter seasons, this dish functions as a reminder of the blissful past. Now being an adult, his newfound independence is expressed through the soup he has brewed on his own.”
Of course, this song also applies to Shang-Chi. After losing his mother as a child, this character still experienced the loss and even guilt into adulthood.
Other popular songs from the Shang-Chi-inspired soundtrack include “Run It” by DJ Snake featuring Rick Ross and Rich Brian. This track appeared during Marvel’s film, as well as in promotional material for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
‘Shang-Chi’s’ Simu Liu covered songs with AJ Rafael for YouTube videos
Although this is technically Liu’s debut song, this actor sometimes showcases his singing skills on YouTube. In 2020, AJ Rafael teamed up with Liu to cover the song “Meant to Be” by Bebe Rexha ft. Florida Georgia Line. The year prior, the two created a holiday medley, titled “Have Yourself A White Christmas,” also posted to YouTube.
In Marvel’s movie, Liu’s character showcased some of his singing skills while jamming out to karaoke with his best friend. That even included an impromptu cover of “A Whole New World” from Disney’s Aladdin.
“Hot Soup” and the other tracks from the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings: The Album is available on most major music streaming platforms. The Marvel movie debuts on Disney+ on Nov. 12, 2021, joining already-released blockbusters like Avengers: Endgame and Avengers: Infinity War.
