Mary-Kate Olsen Really Wanted Kids but Olivier Sarkozy Refused to Budge, Source Says
After five years of a quiet and seemingly happy marriage, fans were shocked when news hit that Mary-Kate Olsen had filed for divorce from her husband, Oliver Sarkozy. When they were initially linked back in 2012, eyebrows were raised considering their 16-year age difference. However, the May/December romance seemed to be a perfect match with the fashion mogul and French financier tying the knot in 2015.
Then, amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and the Stay-At-Home order in New York State, the epicenter of the pandemic in the United States, Olsen filed for divorce. Since the state has currently paused divorced requests except for emergencies, the Full House alum tried to file an emergency petition out of fear her estranged husband would have her evicted.
Unfortunately, Olsen’s petition was not granted. However, we do now know what caused the breakdown of her marriage.
Mary-Kate Olsen and Olivier Sarkozy’s marriage got ugly very quickly
Though Olsen rarely spoke about her personal life, her PDA at Knicks games with Sarkozy and a rare interview about her marriage, made it appear that all was good and well.
“I think we’re lucky [working hard] comes quite naturally for us,” she explained to Porter magazine in 2017. “We don’t need so much time to sit and think and ponder. But then I have a husband, two step-kids and a life; I have to go home and cook dinner. I ride horses on the weekends. You find the thing that helps you relax and if you don’t have it, look for it. Or you get burned out and then you’re not productive.”
Unfortunately, just three years later, Olsen was filing for divorce and claiming that Sarkozy had ended the lease on their shared NYC apartment without her knowledge. This meant she was forced to move out by May 18 in the middle of a global pandemic.
Olivier Sarkozy may have gotten very controlling
It’s no secret that Olsen loves to work, and she’s quite good at what she does. Alongside her twin sister, Ashley, The Row founder has been working since she was six-months-old. In 2006, the Olsen twins were able to shift their success in the entertainment industry into the world of fashion. It looks like Sarkozy was no longer content with the long hours the former actress put in.
“She’s super career-focused and he’s very French and wanted her to be more available,” Yahoo! Celebrity is reporting via People. “You can’t control a girl who has been on the billionaire track since her 20s.”
Things had gotten so hostile, that Olsen had been staying with her twin sister. “It’s gotten very ugly between them,” an insider told E! News. “She’s done with constant drama.”
Mary-Kate Olsen and Olivier Sarkozy clashed over having kids
In addition to Olsen’s work ethic, it appears that the pair could not agree on having children. “A few years ago, having a baby was not a priority for her,” Cosmopolitan reports vis People. “This has changed. Olivier has two grown kids and doesn’t want more. “Mary-Kate thought he would budge on that and he hasn’t.”
The couple’s lifestyle differences were also a point of contention. “Olivier is a party boy and a big spender,” the source explained. “He loves the high life. Mary-Kate prefers to be quiet and alone and doing the things she likes. She’s not that interested in socializing—she likes small gatherings with select people. They ended up being apart quite a bit.”
