Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez officially called it quits on their two-year marriage in August 2024. While the couple seemed to find true happiness when rekindling their romance in 2021, they couldn’t make it last. Now, Affleck seems to be relying on his best friend, Matt Damon, for support. Here’s what a source said regarding how Damon “knows exactly what’s going on” with Affleck as the divorce moves forward.

Matt Damon is Ben Affleck’s ‘confidant,’ a source says

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez’s marriage is officially over after two years. The exes didn’t publicly speak about the breakup before Lopez officially filed for divorce in August 2024. In October 2024, Lopez finally opened up in an interview regarding how she felt in the wake of the split. As for Affleck, he remains silent, preferring to stay out of the spotlight and focus on his work.

“Ben’s very focused on work and his kids,” a source told People in October 2024. “He’s staying busy and happy.”

While Affleck doesn’t run to the press regarding his relationship, he confides in his best friend, Matt Damon. Damon has reportedly been there for Affleck through his entire second marriage.

“He’s very close with Matt. Matt is Ben’s confidant,” the source continued. “Matt always knows exactly what’s going on with Ben. They also enjoy working together.”

So, what are Damon and Affleck up to now? TMZ reports Affleck was spotted directing a Stella Artois commercial starring Damon and David Beckham at Griffin Club Los Angeles in Cheviot Hills. Beckham and Damon, both of whom have worked for Stella Artois before, were seen in tennis gear on a tennis court.

Matt Damon Wants Distance From Ben Affleck Because of How Jennifer Lopez ‘Conducts Herself,’ Source Says

Matt Damon will stand by his best friend, Ben Affleck, in the divorce drama with Jennifer Lopez. However, a source told In Touch Weekly that Damon “feels pretty bad” for Lopez, as she’s opened up to him regarding her hurt.

“He’s been liaising with her on the rollout of the movie [Unstoppable], so he’s on calls with her all the time, and she has opened up to him about how much she’s hurting,” the source said. “He’s been trying to reason with Ben to be a little bit more compassionate to the fact that she’s humiliated right now.”

The source added that Damon tries to play “Switzerland” for the exes, though he has more allegiance to Affleck. Affleck allegedly doesn’t believe that Damon understands the “hell he went through” during his marriage to Lopez, and he doesn’t want Damon to “reprimand” him.

“He says if Matt, or anyone, were in his shoes they would have run from that marriage 10 times faster,” the insider continued.

Ben Affleck has his ‘de facto support group’ with his best friend and Jennifer Garner

Jennifer Lopez has her inner circle helping her through her divorce, and Ben Affleck has his support group. Matt Damon is one of Affleck’s main supporters, as is Affleck’s first wife, Jennifer Garner. A source told In Touch Weekly that Damon, Garner, and members of Affleck’s family act as his “de facto support group” during tough times.

“They’re all in touch with him and with each other,” the source explained. “They’re very much a team and acting as a de facto support group for him. If they’re seeing a thing to worry about, they alert each other immediately. Ben knows they’re all in touch, but he doesn’t know the extent of it.”

Yet another source told In Touch Weekly that Damon pushed Affleck to retain a good relationship with Garner, as “she’s always been a calming influence” during rough times.
