Matt Damon Was Crying From Laughter When Matthew McConaughey Did An Impression of Him While Filming ‘Interstellar’
Matt Damon is known for his versatility as an actor. The Good Will Hunting star has had to master a bunch of different accents for his roles, from Invictus to his latest film, Stillwater, and has gotten pretty good at impersonating people.
However, he’s not the only A-list actor who can do a noteworthy impression.
Apparently, his Interstellar co-star Matthew McConaughey can do an uncanny impression of him. In fact, it’s so good that Damon was crying from laughter at it while they were filming in Iceland.
Matt Damon says Matthew McConaughey can do a perfect impression of him
Damon spoke about McConaughey’s accent while promoting his latest film, Stillwater, during a recent interview with Dan Patrick.
“His accent’s a little softer than the one in [Stillwater],” Damon said. “And Matthew can play it up or down. Matthew can actually do a perfect impression of me.”
Matthew McConaughey did an impression of Matt Damon while they filmed ‘Interstellar’
Damon and McConaughey spent a lot of time together while filming Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar. It was during that time that the two traded impressions of each other.
“When we did Interstellar together, he was like, ‘You do this impression of me,’ and I was like, ‘Yeah, I just found out that my voice could sound like yours if I just dropped down a little bit and went south,’” Damon recalled. “And I’m like, ‘If you come up and go north, you’ll get me perfectly.’”
When it was McConaughey’s turn to impersonate him, Damon couldn’t stop laughing.
“And he started doing it, we were in a van in Iceland and I was crying, because he’s like, perfect. But he was like, ‘I need a catchphrase for you.’ Cause I would do like, ‘Hey, I’m going to take my shirt off [Texas accent].’ … We gotta come up with a catchphrase for Matthew, and then you can hear it.”
Matt Damon thinks Matthew McConaughey could fool his wife with his impression of him
When asked if McConaughey’s impression is authentic enough to trick Damon’s wife, the Oscar-winning actor couldn’t say no.
“We have a similar vocal quality … if we aim at it,” Damon said. “I’m sure he could [fool my wife] over the phone.”
He practices different dialects with a coach
Even though it seems easy for Damon to pull off accents on the big screen, it actually takes him a lot of time and hard work to master them.
“You gotta spend a lot of time with it,” Damon said. “I actually worked a lot in Texas when I was in my 20s, just a lot of the movies I got were down there. So I lived down in that part of the world quite a bit and love it down there.”
He also has a dialect coach that he’s worked with for many years, who helps him figure out how to master accents.
“So I kind of remember the rhythm and the cadence and how people talk. … I also have a dialect coach, Tim Monik … we can analyze and sit there and write down on paper exactly what’s happening. But the best way, usually, is to listen.”
