Matthew McConaughey Calls These Three Holidays ‘The Trifecta’ For Surviving Relationships
Matthew McConaughey has been giving romantic advice in his movies and real life ever since he started acting. Fans best not listen to Wooderson from Dazed & Confused, but Ben from How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days was on to something. McCoanughey has been happily married to Camila Alves since 2012, and they have three kids together, but he’s still got some wisdom for all the other lovers out there and it’s about the holidays.
At the press junket for How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days in 2003, McConaughey shared a lot of that wisdom with reporters. Here’s what he said were the keys to getting through the holidays together.
Matthew McConaughey on ‘The Trifecta’ of holidays
Thanksgiving can be a difficult holiday for many families, but that’s not even part of McConaughey’s Trifecta. He said this sequence of three holidays in a row can break a relationship.
“I call it The Trifecta,” McConaughey told reporters. “It can be, it has been a Bermuda Triangle before and that’s called Christmas, New Years and Valentine’s Day. If a man and a woman can make it through that trifecta, the rest of the year is butter. I made it a few times, and it wasn’t easy.”
Valentine’s Day is the toughest holiday of The Trifecta
How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days came out Feb. 7, in time for Valentine’s Day date nights. McConaughey had reservations about the expectations for Valentine’s Day.
“You all pump it up so big,” McConaughey told female reporters. “Here’s what it is. If you’re out and you see some great gift that just reminds you of your woman, and you get it for her, and it’s just Tuesday. You get her this great gift on Tuesday, all of a sudden, birthday comes up or a holiday comes up a month later and you feel like you’ve got to top that gift that you gave just on a Tuesday. So, if you give a puppy on a Tuesday, you’re in trouble come birthday or Valentine’s Day. So, you can paint yourself into a corner with that.”
Matthew McConaughey’s tips for surviving The Trifecta
Two of the Trifecta holidays are gift-giving holidays, Christmas and Valentine’s Day. McConaughey avoids expensive jewelry on those, seeking something more personal instead.
“See, I’m not a big jewelry guy,” McConaughey said. “I like doing something, finding out a little something about a woman, about what they really want to do and set up things in front of them that are just enough to get them to where they want to go or what they want to do.”
