Matthew McConaughey Lived Single Life to the Fullest: ‘I Took a Lot of Showers in the Daylight Hours’
Matthew McConaughey has been married to Camila Alves since 2012. Before settling down, the actor lived a carefree single life. Here’s what he once said about taking a lot of daytime showers.

Around 2000, it had been a while since McConaughey’s last box office hit. However, he says he got his spark back after being offered a starring role in The Wedding Planner, opposite Jennifer Lopez. He was happy to receive the offer—and the paycheck—that went along with it. McConaughey says he accepted the job right away.
In his book Greenlights, he says he needed to start “hustling” in Hollywood again so he could get the roles he desired. His last big movie was the 1996 film A Time to Kill, so he wanted to get back in the game.

Before filming started in downtown Hollywood, McConaughey says he moved into the Chateau Marmont. Next, he took his check and purchased a pair of leather pants and a motorcycle. Since he would be playing a role in a romantic comedy, McConaughey wanted to keep his mood light and carefree. Consequently, he says he decided to “dance with his devils” and enjoy being a single man.
McConaughey was up for a good time, and it looks like he found it. He says he was staying in a hotel that “promoted mischief,” so he was up for the challenge. According to the actor, he often took daytime showers (he says most of the time he wasn’t alone during those showers).
McConaughey also took advantage of his free time by tanning by the pool, spending time with friends, and engaging in “late-night revelry.” One thing he enjoyed about staying at the Chateau was that he had a key to the kitchen. He says he would make steaks at 3:00 in the morning.

McConaughey thought he would remain a bachelor, but he eventually settled down and married his wife, Camila Alves, in 2012. They have three children named Levi, Vida, and Livingston. McConaughey shared his happiness with his fans when Alves, a Brazilian model, became a U.S. citizen in 2015.
Alves says she and McConaughey have a lot in common. She once admitted she didn’t expect the life she has now with her movie-star husband. “We have a lot of similar qualities and it works,” she told People magazine. “Matthew and I are very simple people. I didn’t expect any of this.”
Right now, McConaughey and Alves are focusing on raising their children as best they can. During an interview with Town & Country, McConaughey says parenting can be challenging, because you must balance giving your children what they need with what they want.
“Affluent people can give their kids everything they want, but they’re not usually going to get what they need,” McConaughey told Town & Country. “Loving a child is a lot harder if you really give a damn. ‘No’ takes a lot more energy. It’s a lot easier to say ‘yes.’”
