Matthew McConaughey Once Said There Were 3 Ways Women He Dated Would Drive Him Crazy
How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is a romantic-comedy that has stood the test of time. Fans probably still love it because it speaks to what everyone worries about in relationships. Of course, in the movie, Andie Anderson (Kate Hudson) was specifically trying to drive Ben (Matthew McConaughey) away, and he was determined to make it work no matter what.
While discussing the film at the press junket in 2003, McConaughey said he could relate to Ben a lot. There were several things he mentioned that could scare him off when he was dating a woman. Nine years later, McConaughey was happily married to Camila Alves, but here were some of McConaughey’s no-nos in his bachelor years.
Don’t leave things in Matthew McConaughey’s drawers without asking
In How to Lose a Guy In 10 Days, Andie leaves her tampons in Ben’s drawers to gross him out. For McConaughey, it wasn’t the feminine hygiene product that freaked him out, but rather the assumption.
“Personally, items like that that are like necessities, don’t really bug me or make me squirm,” McConaughey said. “It’s the fact that they show up uninvited. I’ve had somebody take a drawer, took the liberty of trying to take a drawer. It’s my drawer until I invite you to say, ‘Would you like to have the drawer?’ And especially early in a relationship.”
Do not call Matthew McConaughey and hang up
Okay, this one is creepy whether you’re dating or not. McConaughey said he would sometimes get people hanging up as soon as he picked up the phone.
“Call, click,” McConaughey said. “Now you’ve got caller ID so people know better than to do that but then they can block a number. But then you’re going, ‘Well, who else would be calling and clicking, calling and clicking?’ Then you get the call and it was the same that’s blocked again. I’ve got one blocked call in the last three days and now I pick it up and it’s you, what’s going on? If you’ve got somebody that’s a little overanxious? Yeah, I get a little bit spooked.”
The very worst thing you could say
How to Lose a Guy In 10 Days also points out the loaded question, “What are you thinking?” McConaughey agrees that’s a sure way to ruin the mood.
“And every woman’s done that,” McConaughey said. “You get 20 good minutes of silence when you’re just sitting there, on a road trip, you’re driving somewhere and you’re just enjoying the road, you haven’t really thought about anything. You’re just watching the movie, you’re just sitting there reading a book on the other end of the couch, and all of a sudden, we always feel it before you ask, ‘What are you thinking?’”
McConaughey further described the anxiety caused by the question.
“Then what do we do?” McConaughey said. “Our mind starts spinning. We start thinking, ‘What am I thinking? What was I thinking? I wasn’t thinking about nothing.’ And then all of a sudden, they go, ‘Okay.’ And we go, ‘Whoa, whoa, wait a minute. What are you talking about?’ And all of a sudden, there it gets the ball rolling.”
