Matthew McConaughey Was Initially Worried He Would ‘Lose Himself’ If He Got Married To Wife Camila Alves
Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves are one of the most popular celebrity couples in the entertainment world. The two have been married for nine years and have three children together, and appear to have a very healthy relationship.
Although the couple is happily married now, there was a period of time when McConaughey wasn’t sure if he should tie the knot with Alves.
According to McConaughey, he had serious concerns about losing himself within a potential marriage.
Matthew McConaughey thought he’d lose himself after getting married to Camila Alves
McConaughey detailed his thoughts about marriage during that time in a recent interview with Graham Bensinger.
“I want—like I think most people want—to have 100 percent of an experience,” McConaughey said. “And my fear then was, ‘Oh, well if you marry, you’re only getting 50% of the experience and they’re getting 50.”
Over time, McConaughey realized that he didn’t have the healthiest philosophy about marriage and worked to change his perception of the union. In time, he realized how powerful a marriage can be when it’s with the right person.
“I worked to realize, no, no, no, actually, if you’re with the right person, you can have a 100 percent experience with them they can have a 100 percent,” McConaughey said. “And actually together, the funny math is, it’s 300 percent.”
He was looking for a life partner when he hit his mid-30s
Even though McConaughey knew he wanted to have a life partner when he reached his mid-30s, he was having a hard time finding the one. When asked why none of his prior relationships had reached the next level of commitment, he attributed it to a number of factors.
“That’s a great question that I don’t really know the answer to,” McConaughey said. “But it’s a mix of that timing, where are we individually in our life, and who do we have in them at that time. … Been fortunate to have some wonderful relationships where I don’t have any regrets of those … like this is as far as we could go.”
However, McConaughey would soon meet the love of his life.
“Later on, I guess whatever age I was, that’s when I met … Camila, now my wife,” McConaughey said.
Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves’ parents’ marriages made them hesitant to wed
Both McConaughey and Alves’ parents have been divorced and remarried to each other several times. When the two started dating, they both had reservations about marriage.
“We kind of laughed about it, we were always like, ‘Yeah, right, what’s that no marriage thing about? Our parents couldn’t quite pull it off,’” McConaughey said. “Or actually, let’s look at it this way, maybe our parents loved it so much they kept doing it … Maybe our parents just really loved honeymoons.”
Later on, they decided that if they did get married, they only wanted to do it once.
“So we kind of half-seriously always joked it off, but also recognized, said, ‘Hey, if we get married, let’s really make sure we’re doing it for the right reasons.’”
