Maury Povich’s age is always a shock to his viewers

But even those who are very familiar with Maury may be shocked to learn about Povich’s age. Most viewers assume that the talk show host is actually much younger than he is. However, the Washington D.C. native had a whole career prior to creating his own show. Povich was born on January 17, 1939, which means that he is just a few weeks shy of his 83rd birthday.

But despite Povich’s age, his primary audience continues to remain very young. The host himself has noticed the unusual phenomenon but still doesn’t have the proper explanation for it. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, he got candid about how Maury is an anomaly in many ways.

The journalist understands that his TV show is somewhat of an anomoly

“It’s remarkable because it goes against the grain of everything any kind of research organization would tell you; which is why the older I get the younger my audience?” Povich remarked. “Why the older I get, my audience is made up of a lot of young women? That doesn’t, you know, doesn’t ring true it goes against the grain. And I don’t want to pause and think about it too much because I’ll probably outthink myself.”

Povich may not understand the gap in age between himself and his viewers. However, he seems to know why his guests and audience members feel comfortable baring their souls to him. “But I do know that I think what happens is that the audience thinks that I’m either a member of the family or a good friend,” he revealed. “And so they welcome me into their homes and allow me to be with them on the couch and they’re very comfortable with me. I think the main responsibility of a host is to be an extension of the audience, and that’s how I think of myself.”

Povich also has an impressive net worth thanks to his hit talk show

Clearly, Povich’s mindset has paid off tremendously for him. Maury has been successful since it premiered in 1991. Furthermore, the success of the show has helped Povich become a very wealthy man. According to Celebrity Net Worth, the TV personality has a salary of $14 million. Furthermore, his net worth is a staggering $80 million. Clearly, Povich struck gold with his show and his memorable catchphrase “You are [not] the father.”
