‘Mayans MC’ Is Bringing Back Another ‘Sons of Anarchy’ Star — A Look Back at Kim Coates Journey as Tig Trager
Mayans MC season 4 is all about the war between the Mayans and the Sons of Anarchy. Does this mean stars from the original series will return? According to Kim Coates — who played Alex “Tig” Trager in Kurt Sutter’s original biker drama — he will be back. And, he’s promising that things are about to explode. Ahead of Coates’ return, here’s a look back at his journey as Tig.
‘Mayans MC’ takes places about two-and-a-half years after ‘Sons of Anarchy’
The Sons of Anarchy spinoff, Mayans MC, takes place about two-and-a-half years after the original series, and is set in the fictional town of Santo Padre, California. The focus of the spinoff is Ezekiel “EZ” Reyes (JD Pardo), a young man who was never supposed to live the biker gang life. However, he’s been drawn into it and can’t get out.
In contrast, the original FX drama Sons of Anarchy took place in the fictional town of Charming, California, and the series was led by Charlie Hunnam’s Jax Teller. It told the story of the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club, Redwood Original (SAMCRO), and Jax’s rise to becoming the leader, following in his father’s footsteps.
One of the most notable supporting characters in the original series was fan-favorite Tig Trager, played by Coates.
A look back at Kim Coates’ journey as Tig on ‘Sons of Anarchy’
As a member of SAMCRO, Tig had a few heroic moments. He also had his share of epic fails. Some of his worst moments included drowning a man in a tub of urine (but in context it was sort of justified), getting arrested for indecent exposure, accidentally killing Opie’s wife Donna, and accidentally killing his date Veronica Pope.
On the heroic side, Tig never pursued Gemma (Katey Sagal) despite his fascination with her. He also offered to be a sacrificial lamb for SAMCRO and give up his life, but it ended up being Opie who was beaten to death in a prison cell.
Tig was so loyal to SAMCRO and its leaders, it was almost to a fault. He did everything he could to protect it — including acting as a distraction to the police. When Gemma needed to escape police custody and get to the airport, Tig had the police chase him across county lines in a Teller-Morrow tow truck.
Kim Coates promises ‘war’ in his appearance on ‘Mayans MC’
Ahead of his return to the SOA universe on Mayans MC, Coates took to Twitter to confirm he was reprising the role. He also made a big promise.
“I’m Back. Like really back. The war is on ..keep watching peeps… shit is about to explode …SOA vs MMC @MayansFX @SonsofAnarchy @EmilioRivera48 …… Tig,” Coates wrote.
In a second tweet, Coates shared a photo of himself back in his SAMCRO cut as Tig. He wrote in the caption, “Do Not F**k With This Man…. Ever. @MayansFX @SonsofAnarchy…SOA vs MMC. Bring it.”
New episodes of Mayans MC air Tuesday nights on FX and are available the next day on Hulu. All seven seasons of Sons of Anarchy are also available on Hulu.
