MCU: A Fan-Favorite Actor Might Have Just Teased a Jump to the ‘Star Wars’ Universe
With the sequel trilogy cast likely done with the saga, Star Wars will need some new on-screen talent going forward. The Mandalorian already pushed the franchise into new territory — live-action television — for the very first time. But it sounds more and more likely that some Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) stars will journey over to the “galaxy far, far away” soon.
Marvel Studios and ‘Star Wars’ are both owned by Disney
Like Star Wars, the MCU is a sprawling, interconnected shared universe filled with limitless potential. But the big difference between the two is how Marvel Studios has built fan goodwill. With more than 20 movies released, the MCU has only grown more popular. Meanwhile, the Disney era of Star Wars has left the fan base more divided than ever.
So most MCU actors, writers, and directors already naturally fit into Star Wars. The fact that both franchises are owned by The Walt Disney Company makes matters even easier. Marvel tends to lock down especially actors to long-term contracts. But the connective tissue between the two Disney flagships means sharing talent is much more accessible.
1 ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ star has teased a potential reunion with Taika Waititi
Jon Favreau (Iron Man) and Oscar winner Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit) have both successfully jumped from the MCU to Star Wars with The Mandalorian. And Waititi is signed to direct and co-write a new Star Wars movie too. Speaking to Insider, Jeff Goldblum — who appeared in Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok — has now teased a new project with him. Could it be Star Wars?
I’m a fan of [The Mandalorian]. I’m a fan, of course, of Taika Waititi. I adore him, always did before I even worked with him. And maybe we’ll do something again together. We’ve talked about doing something else that has to be secret right now but I would do anything with him, sure. And Disney Plus are just a great bunch of people to be associated with. They are a wonderful family, how smart and sweet and kind they are.
Goldblum isn’t only in the MCU, of course. He has his own Disney+ documentary series, The World According to Jeff Goldblum. So he’s even more entrenched in the House of Mouse than most. Since Waititi is likely in the early stages of his Star Wars movie, it’s very possible he has talked with Goldblum about joining the project when it gets fully up and running.
Perhaps Goldblum will return as The Grandmaster in the MCU
Waititi does have another Disney movie in the works, 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder. His second MCU movie, the sequel will see Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, and Natalie Portman return to the MCU. So there is a chance Goldblum could simply be referring to reprising his Marvel role for that movie.
After all, fans loved his performance as The Grandmaster. And though the character’s fate appeared bleak, he technically survived the events of Thor: Ragnarok. Few stars complement Waititi’s quirky sense of humor the way Goldblum does. Perhaps then the director and star will head back to the MCU together. Fans will have to wait and see.
