MCU Fan Theory: Captain Marvel is the Next Leader of the Avengers
Marvel movies are leading the pack in the world of entertainment. Over the past twelve years, blockbuster films such as Iron Man, The Avengers, and Black Panther have unified fans and made millions in box office revenue. With the MCU’s Phase 3 officially concluded, fans are looking to the future, and looking forward to more big films and big surprises.
Recently, some fans on Reddit discussed what could happen in Phase 4, and whether one particular member of The Avengers will end up leading the pack.
‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ concluded MCU’s Phase 3
Many people have grown up with the Marvel films. Beginning primarily with the release of Iron Man in 2008, fans quickly became invested in the stories of the very fallible superheroes – people like Tony Stark, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Bruce Banner, and Captain America.
Phase 3, the third part of the MCU, kicked off in 2016, with the release of the film Captain America: Civil War. Phase 3 films are noted for being a bit darker than the previous movies, full of conflict and character development.
Phase 3 films included Black Panther, Captain America, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok, and more. Everything that happened in Phase 3 acted to set the stage for the grand finale films, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame, where all of The Avengers overcome their differences and unify to defeat the supervillain, Thanos.
The conclusion to Phase 3 was not Endgame, however — everything wrapped up in the 2019 film, Spider-Man: Far From Home, which saw Peter Parker struggling to deal with the aftermath of losing his mentor, Tony Stark, and ultimately resolving to forge ahead.
What’s next for the MCU?
In the summer of 2019, Marvel Studios gave fans a look ahead at Phase 4, and there’s good reason why everyone is so excited. With films like Black Widow and The Eternals slated for release later in 2020, viewers will soon be able to enjoy new characters as well as some familiar favorites. Although the COVID-19 pandemic has affected Marvel’s release schedule, they still have a lot on the docket for 2021 and beyond.
A few of the other movies planned include Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings, Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, Thor: Love And Thunder, Black Panther 2, and Captain Marvel 2. There will also be a slew of shows released to Disney+, including the highly-anticipated show about Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston.
Fans speculate that Captain Marvel will be leading the charge
Even though Marvel Studios unveiled part of their outline for the overall film structure of Phase 4, they were vague on details regarding what was next for beloved characters like Black Panther and Carol Danvers.
Still, some fans on Reddit might have a good idea of one important plot point. In a recent thread, fans speculated that Captain Marvel will be the natural choice to take over as the unofficial commander of The Avengers in Phase 4.
One poster stated that she is perfect for the role because she is “she’s disciplined, can link cosmic and earth stories” and of course, Brie Larson is a great actress. Another stated that there is plenty of character development that Marvel could choose to pull from the comic books, including the issue of Captain Marvel’s alcoholism and her abusive father.
Many posters were united in agreement that it seems Marvel has already positioned Captain Marvel as the next lead character, and that the only real question is how deep into her backstory they will choose to go. Regardless, fans might have to wait a while to find out for sure — depending on what the new filming schedule ends up looking like.
