MCU Fans Can’t Wait For More of Sam’s Backstory in ‘Falcon & Winter Soldier’
With many Marvel movies on hold or indefinite hiatus, Marvel Cinematic Universe fans are eager for any new info that they can get about upcoming projects.
In 2019, Marvel Studios promised a whole slew of new shows and movies, including the highly-anticipated series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, featuring Bucky Barnes aka The Winter Soldier and Sam Wilson, also known as The Falcon.
These two characters have played supporting roles in previous Marvel films, and viewers are excited to see Wilson, in particular, step to the forefront in this all-new chapter of the MCU.
The character of Sam Wilson is a fan favorite
Anthony Mackie is a talented actor who has appeared in many television shows and movies over the years. Born in New Orleans in 1978, Mackie began acting while in high school, later going on to graduate from the prestigious Juilliard School’s Drama Division.
His film career took off in the early 2000s, with early roles in movies such as 8 Mile and Notorious, where he played the rapper Tupac Shakur.
Mackie has portrayed other historical figures on screen over the years, including Martin Luther King Jr. in the HBO film All the Way. However, arguably Mackie’s most popular role has been that of Sam Wilson/The Falcon in the MCU.
He made his first appearance as the character in 2014, in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and has gone on to appear in five other Marvel films, including Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.
What do we know about ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’?
Sam Wilson has been the ideal counterpart to Captain America over the years, his sarcasm and realistic attitude often counter-balancing Cap’s idealistic nature. Therefore, when it was announced in late 2018 that Anthony Mackie would be reprising his role as Wilson in the new series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, fans rejoiced.
Not a lot is known about the series yet, although Marvel has confirmed that the series will take place after the events of Avengers: Endgame. It is also set to be the very first series in Marvel’s Phase Four.
This will allow audience members to see how Wilson really comes into his own as a singular hero and should enable his friendship with Bucky Barnes to really develop.
Originally, the series was set to premiere on Disney+ in August 2020, however, since filming was put on hold in the spring of 2020, it is not known whether the series will still be available for streaming this year.
Fans can’t wait to learn more about Sam Wilson
There’s no doubt that The Falcon is one of the MCU’s most popular and beloved supporting characters. Fans are understandably excited about the opportunity to learn more not only about The Falcon’s journey as a superhero but about his home life, as well.
Recently, some fans on Reddit discussed what they could see in the new series, and how showrunners could portray Wilson.
One poster stated that “for all his appearances, we still don’t know a ton about Sam. I’m excited to see if The Falcon and the Winter Soldier delves into his personal life a bit.”
Another fan revealed that it looks as though Marvel will be doing just that, claiming that a showrunner previously stated that viewers will need to “go home with these characters; we need to spend time unearthing who they are.”
It is certain that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will make waves with the fan community when it does eventually premiere.
