Chris Evans has become synonymous with his work as Captain America. However, while his time in the red, white, and blue appeared to have come to an end with Endgame, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is reportedly already trying to lure him back.

The internet went ablaze after reports that they were trying to negotiate his way back to the universe. However, some fans on Reddit have an idea that could both bring him out and keep his departure in Endgame pure.

America’s Captain

Evans was already a veteran of the superhero genre when he first joined the MCU during its early stages. While his work in the Fantastic Four was relatively successful years before, it never turned into the breakout role that awaited him years earlier. When First Avenger was released in 2011, America had never gotten a blockbuster treatment of the character.

Smaller versions appeared on television and in smaller movies, but he never got the main event like Spider-Man, Batman, and other giants of the genre got many times over. While Iron Man helped establish the MCU in 2008, Captain America helped set the tone that remains in the series to this day. Through three Captain movies, four Avengers movies, and sporadic appearances across the series, the character became a masterful success.

From his puny days in World War II to his eventual time-traveling journey that allowed him to live to his natural old age, Evans gave humanity to a role that could have quickly gone the wrong direction. While he effectively handed the title of America’s Captain to Anthony Mackey’s Falcon, however, executives may be ready to bring him back.

Is Chris Evans coming back?

Evans has a natural attachment to the character, per The Independent. While he’s gone on to great success in several other roles, he’ll likely be glued to those red, white, and blue digs for the rest of his life. In many ways, the character helped him grow into himself off-screen, too. He spoke about this with The Independent in 2019.

“When you’re playing a character for a long time, you start to see the parallels between what the character’s going through and what you’re going through. You start to look at your own conflicts and circumstances through the eyes of someone who might handle it better than you would.”

Captain America came to us in the Obama administration and left right before one of the most trying times in recent memory. As such, perhaps Evans, Feige, and the rest of Disney is ready to bring him back and help the nation heal, albeit through fictional portrayals in a world now starving for new Marvel content. However, whether this means an actual film or a small cameo in future pictures remains to be seen.

How can they do this?

Captain America could come back in many different ways. While he left a young, middle-aged man at the end of Endgame and returned a man who appeared to be in the latter stages of his life, those few seconds were a 70-year journey that the audience hasn’t seen. Of course, if the series wanted to keep continuity, they could always give him another send-off without resurrecting him in his younger days.

One user on Reddit sees it as an opportunity to let Falcon and the Winter Soldier, now Mackey and Cap’s former friend, Bucky, say goodbye after they have already taken. “A reverse of the scene where he visited old Peggy would be emotional. Sam and Bucky going to visit him.”

Of course, many saw his ending in the last event film as definitive, and any addition could either overwhelm or underwhelm an already powerful image. As one user put it, “I couldn’t handle that.”

Evans has played coy, claiming that it was only a rumor in a tweet. However, it wouldn’t be the first time that an MCU actor has lied about their casting. Whatever the case may be, Captain could return to the MCU if everything goes right, and Marvel will have to make sure that they don’t disappoint an already great ending.
