MCU Star Robert Downey Jr. Posts a Creative Bird Reference to Celebrate His Anniversary
Robert Downey, Jr. – aka Iron Man – just celebrated his 15th wedding anniversary with his wife Susan. Happily married with two kids, the power pair are also business partners with the Team Downey production company.
Utilizing his trademark wit, the Avengers star took to Instagram with a sweet post to his spouse highlighting the faithful qualities of the monogamous penguin.
Susan Downey thought the Marvel star was ‘weird’
With Susan working as a producer in 2003, she met Downey on the set of a film. Taking a lunch break with the MCU star, she had the opportunity to see him on a personal level.
“We were up in Montreal prepping for Gothika, and we had lunch with the director and Halle Berry,” Susan told the Hollywood Reporter in 2014. “Everybody else ordered Japanese, but Robert told us how oatmeal was the ‘superfood.'”
Getting a glimpse of Downey’s eccentric side, Susan’s initial impression of the Iron Man actor would fall under “intrigued.”
“He brought his own packets of oatmeal to have at lunch And he had this box of various herbs and stuff,” she recalled. “And then he started doing these yoga moves. I mean, he was interesting but weird.”
Robert Downey, Jr. was on a new path
Downey’s history with substance addiction was well documented, including his stint in prison. Upon meeting the actor, Susan was aware of his past but didn’t have any personal frame of reference.
“Addiction was so foreign to me,” she said. “I was incredibly ignorant of the hold it had on people.”
Downey was grateful for that ignorance. “Thank God for that,” he added. “If she knew the depths of my depravity, we would not be sitting here.”
When they began dating, Susan knew she was not with the Robert Downey, Jr. of the tabloid headlines. The Doctor Doolittle star had made a full commitment to sobriety when his romance with Susan began. The two were engaged after six months.
“The guy I met was not that person,” she told Harper’s Bazaar in 2009. “He was clean and sober — completely professional when he was working, and then, in the off hours, he was just a fun guy. … I knew three months in that this was it.”

In honor of their 15th wedding anniversary, Downey got creative on Instagram with a special message to his wife. Captioning a pic of a penguin-couple cake topper on a beautifully crafted chocolate confection, the Marvel Cinematic Universe star paid tribute to his bride.
“Today I salute my female emperor penguin partner who has laid a single egg twice and changed my life 3 times,” Downey wrote on Instagram. “Here’s to the next #15 seasons of re-pairing…”
Perhaps Guy Ritchie, who directed Downey in the Sherlock Holmes franchise, most accurately sums up the Hollywood power couple’s successful balance of work and marriage.
“Maybe it’s because they started their relationship working on a movie together, so it’s natural to them,” Ritchie explained. “But the reason I call them perfectly symbiotic, it’s that they each represent the other side of each other’s coin. There’s no clashing over the same space, although they’re always looking in the same direction. It’s a very rare thing they have.”
