Megan Thee Stallion and Her Longtime Stylist, EJ King, Part Ways – Here’s Why
Megan Thee Stallion is not having the easiest year. In addition to the rapper allegedly being shot by Tory Lanez, Stallion is constantly having to defend herself against rumors that she provoked the attack against her. She’s also had several other personal relationships end. The latest of which is the end of her working relationship with her wardrobe stylist, EJ King.
Who is EJ King?
King began his work in visual arts nearly 20 years ago. According to his bio on his website, his journey in Hollywood began with him working as an extra on movie sets, including 2006’s Dreamgirls.
From there, he expanded his resume as a hairstylist and makeup artist. His wardrobe styling career began with work on music videos and photo shoots – such as King Magazine.
King’s wardrobe styling career also includes him working on a consulting basis. One of his major styling consulting gigs was for Kelly Rowland. He’s also styled artists including T-Pain, Nelly, Ashanti, Courtney Love, Day 26, Melanie Fiona, Chris Brown, and Keyshia Cole.
King was Tamar Braxton’s wardrobe stylist for at least a year. He began working with her more consistently as she toured to promote her album, Bluebird of Happiness. King appeared alongside Braxton during season 5 of her We TV reality series Tamar & Vince.
Television is something King enjoys. Aside from Tamar & Vince, he appears on the BET reality series About The Business. Styling remains his first love.
He’s been instrumental in helping to shape Megan Thee Stallion’s image. He told BET in a 2019 interview that he expressed interest in working with Stallion through a mutual friend. He later sent the “Hot Girl” rapper a DM to her Instagram account about wanting to style her – and the rest is history.
EJ King ends his relationship with Megan Thee Stallion; says he wants to focus on his own personal brand
King has been by Stallion’s side as her career continues to rise. He’s styled her for all major music videos, photoshoots, performances, and industry events. He’s also walked alongside Stallion on many red carpets and designed her looks for her tours.
He says of Stallion in his 2019 BET interview, “Working with Megan is a breath of fresh air, because she’s such a down-to-earth person.”
But the relationship between Stallion and King is no longer…at least professionally. King says he wants to focus on his personal brand instead of pouring his energy into his clients, which includes him launching his own clothing line.
“I don’t want to work under somebody or ever feel like the way that people can make you feel like what you do for them in their life is disposable,” he says in an Instagram video. “When you work for people personally, sometimes they like to forget that you’re your own person and sometimes the services you do for them are no longer needed.”
Many felt his remarks were shady toward Stallion. But he insists it’s not the truth. He says Stallion is aware of why he’s no longer working with her and that they have a mutual understanding. He also says there is no beef between he and Stallion.
“It’s strictly my truth and I just don’t want people to keep asking me things about somebody that I’m not around and I want people to stop asking me things about a situation that I have nothing to do with,” King continues, seemingly speaking of Stallion’s issues with Tory Lanez following her shooting incident.
Stallion hasn’t spoken out about her relationship, or lack thereof, with King.
