Rise to fame
Megan Thee Stallion started recording in 2016, though at this time she was relatively underground. Before this, she regularly posted freestyles to her social media, though she didn’t record because her mother asked her not to record until she turned 21. Once Megan was 21, she produced mixtapes and EPs until she got noticed by an independent Houston record label in 2018, and in 2019 she received her first Billboard Hot 100 single with “Big Ole Freak.” That summer, she also spawned the popular internet meme “Hot Girl Summer,” which she later made into a top 20 hit. Her social media handles are still an homage to this meme and song.
She continued to put out hits in 2020, with “Savage” becoming a popular dance challenge on TikTok. “WAP” was also an instant success for her and Cardi B, electrifying social media before receiving a more inadvertent promotion from shocked conservative commentators. In most of Megan Thee Stallion’s music videos, her outfits are revealing and extravagant. She has a great body, and isn’t afraid to show it off. Megan Thee Stallion started college at Prairie View A&M University, an HBCU in her hometown of Houston, Texas. While pursuing her degree, she and her friends Kelsey and Daren still liked to have fun. The trio would make videos of themselves twerking, Megan said in an interview with Rolling Stone. They first became known for these videos on campus, before the videos went viral outside of the college community. Eventually, they reached the administrators of the college, who weren’t happy with Megan’s self-expression. They managed to avoid having their parents notified in exchange for writing a research paper, but clearly Megan Thee Stallion wasn’t going to listen to these people’s qualms.
On top of getting in trouble for her twerking videos, the college set Megan a dress code that she found ridiculous and “super uppity.” Houston gets hot, but according to the rapper, “They didn’t want us to wear shorts.” Luckily, Megan Thee Stallion decided that these college administrators wouldn’t control her, the way she danced, or the way she dressed.
Megan’s education today
Megan Thee Stallion is still in college, though not at Prairie View A&M. She transferred to Texas Southern University, where she currently is studying healthcare administration and is close to finishing her degree. Because of her rap career, she’s now doing school part-time, but she’s still committed to finishing her degree. Her mother and grandmother both wanted Megan to graduate college, and Megan wants to make them proud. While Prairie View A&M may have tried to stifle Megan, she didn’t let that sour her view of higher education. Megan Thee Stallion shows her fans that she can both be sexual and fun while making responsible choices.
