The couple, who married in May 2018 after over a year of dating, revealed the news on Feb. 14 through their spokesperson.
“We can confirm that Archie is going to be a big brother,” the representative told People, which also published a picture showing the two resting outside together while Markle cradled her belly. “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are overjoyed to be expecting their second child.”
The news comes nearly a year after the pair stepped down from their royal duties and moved to the United States in search of a fresh start. They have now settled into a multi-million dollar mansion in Santa Barbara, California, which they purchased in the summer of 2020, according to Page Six.
At the time, a source told the outlet: “They intend to put down their roots in this house and the quiet community, which has considerable privacy. This is where they want to bring Archie up, where they hope he can have as normal a life as possible.”
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry previously said they wanted to expand their family
About a year after they welcomed Archie in May 2019, an unnamed friend of Meghan’s told The Daily Mail that they’d heard Meghan say she wanted to give their son a sibling.
“She joked that he needs a pint-size little buddy other than the dogs,” the source shared. “Meghan lit up when she spoke about Archie. She said he’s a bundle of energy and prefers playing oversleeping.”
Later, Prince Harry admitted to British Vogue he indeed wanted more children. “Two, maximum,” he continued, expressing concern over Earth’s dwindling resources. “I’ve always thought: this place is borrowed. And, surely, being as intelligent as we all are, or as evolved as we all are supposed to be, we should be able to leave something better behind for the next generation,” he added.
In late 2020, Meghan revealed to The New York Times that she’d been pregnant earlier in the year but suffered a miscarriage on one July morning that “began as ordinarily as any other day.”
“Make breakfast. Feed the dogs. Take vitamins. Find that missing sock. Pick up the rogue crayon that rolled under the table. Throw my hair in a ponytail before getting my son from his crib,” she wrote of her daily routine.
“After changing his diaper, I felt a sharp cramp. I dropped to the floor with him in my arms, humming a lullaby to keep us both calm, the cheerful tune a stark contrast to my sense that something was not right. I knew, as I clutched my firstborn child, that I was losing my second.”
She went on to discuss the path to healing, sharing her hope that she and Prince Harry would be OK.
