Meghan Markle ‘Does Regret’ the Way She Handled Her Royal Exit and Some Comments That ‘Backfired,’ Source Says
Meghan Markle and her husband, Prince Harry, made waves back in 2020 when they snnounced that they would be stepping back from their royal roles. But even before that, cracks were beginning to show in their relationship with the family. The two went on record during their 2019 tour of southern Africa, where Meghan first revealed that she was unhappy and Harry first hinted at tensions with his brother.
Fast forward five years after that first reveal, and sources close to the Duchess of Sussex say she “does regret” some of what went down during that infamous exit.
Meghan Markle ‘does regret’ how she handled certain aspects of her royal exit
Many people blame Meghan for her husband’s falling out with his family, but the reality is that he had to want the exit, too. They both left on their own terms in search of a more private life, and they have since settled down in Montecito, California. Now, years after the exit and with little progress having been made on royal relationships, and insider claims Meghan “does regret” some of what happened during that time.
According to Express, a source told Grazia Magazine that Meghan “does regret certain statements that she made” when the news of the royal rift was at its height and that some of the duchess’ comments “weren’t received in the way that she had expected and several of her comments have backfired.”
“Meghan wanted the takeaway from their Oprah interview to be about her mental health, and I think Meghan regretted sitting down with The Cut [in 2022] because she provided endless commentary for her critics.”
At the time, Meghan was likely both frustrated and exhausted by the way things were going in the royal family, and perhaps some comments were made out of frustration, such as setting the record straight on how Kate Middleton made her cry (not the other way around) the week before her wedding. While it seems Meghan’s version is the true story, some people didn’t like that she called Kate out, though it’s unclear what exactly the duchess regrets.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are no closer to healing the royal rift
The reality is that Meghan and Harry still don’t have a good relationship with most of Harry’s relatives, but that might not matter. There have been plenty of rumors that Harry and Meghan are “desperate” to make a royal return, but that just doesn’t seem to be the case. The two appear to have a strong marriage and are building a loving family unit in California.
Some do say that Harry and Meghan’s poor relationship with the royals is not helping their reputation, and while that might be true, perhaps they don’t care. The Sussexes have a close-knit circle of people who support and root for them, and maybe they would take that over being loved but stuck in the royal family. In a surprise turn of events, though, the royal family did wish Prince Harry a happy 40th birthday on September 15.
