Over the years Prince Harry’s wife, Meghan Markle, has been compared to her mother-in-law, Princess Diana. Most of those have come from royal fans who have also compared Prince William’s wife, Kate Middleton, to the late princess. But in the Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan, the Duke of Sussex drew comparisons himself and said that the duchess is like his mother in many ways.

However, some royal watchers have long thought that Meghan may have the wool pulled over Harry’s eyes and has actually made a conscious effort to try and be like her husband’s late mom. Here’s more on that, plus what Meghan’s former pals have said about her wanting to be “Princess Diana 2.0.”

Meghan’s old pals claim that she always wanted to be ‘Diana 2.0’

The Duchess of Sussex’s former best friend, Ninaki Priddy, who grew up with Meghan and served as the maid of honor in her first wedding to Trevor Engelson, insisted that her old bestie always wanted to be “Princess Diana 2.0.”

“She was always fascinated by the royal family,” Priddy told the Daily Mail, adding, “She wanted to be Princess Diana 2.0. She had one of Princess Diana’s books on her bookshelf, and even when she was with Trevor, she told me she wanted to go and stay in London for at least a month … I wasn’t shocked or even surprised to hear about Prince Harry. I knew she used to love The Princess Diaries films about a commoner who becomes part of a royal family. She was very taken with that idea.”

Princess Diana’s biographer Andrew Morton, who authored a book about the Duchess of Sussex as well titled Meghan: A Hollywood Princess, heard that too. Morton wrote that he spoke to people who knew Harry’s bride and was told that Meghan used to watch old videos of Charles and Diana’s wedding day and became fascinated with the princess.

Meghan’s old pals all agreed that she was “intrigued by Diana. Not just for her style, but for her independent humanitarian mission, seeing her as a role model.” They also recalled how devastated she was when Princess Diana died and watched the funeral as “tears coursed down [her] cheeks.”

Expert says Meghan is ‘echoing Princess Diana’ and ‘no longer keeping it a secret’

A royal commentator has picked up on several ways Meghan has mirrored Princess Diana too since marrying her son and claimed that the former Suits star isn’t even trying to hide it anymore.

Daily Mail Editor-At-Large Charlotte Griffiths told Palace Confidential that she believes the Duchess of Sussex has been “echoing” Prince Harry’s mother and her entire style on purpose.

She opined: “I don’t think it’s a coincidence. There are 10,000 pictures of Diana and 10,000 pictures of Meghan and you probably could match some things by coincidence. I think she’s been doing it all along and I don’t think she’s even making a secret of it. I think there are times she definitely echoes Diana on purpose.

“We know that in the early stages of her relationship with Harry, she encouraged Harry to think a lot about his mother and she brought Diana up a lot in conversations [and] I think she’s happy with the association.”
