Meghan, Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex discussed Queen Elizabeth II and other royals during their interview with Oprah Winfrey on March 7, 2021. Not really mentioned during the two-hour Oprah With Meghan and Harry: A Primetime Special was Meghan’s family.

However, in an unaired clip — Oprah spent more than three hours talking with the couple — the Duchess of Sussex opened up about her half-sister, Samantha Markle, as well as her estranged father, Thomas Markle.

Meghan Markle told Oprah she ‘grew up as an only child’

Meghan was born to her father and mother, Doria Ragland, on Aug. 4, 1981. Ragland’s first child, Meghan’s birth marked the third time her dad became a parent. In a previous marriage, he’d welcomed two kids, Thomas Markle Jr. and Samantha, both at least 10 years older than Meghan.

As a kid, the former Suits star didn’t spend much time with her half-siblings. Meghan told Oprah she “grew up as an only child,” in a clip CBS This Morning aired on March 8, 2021, according to CBS News.

She attended an all-girls Catholic school in Los Angeles and regularly hung out on the set of Married…with Children because her dad handled the show’s lighting.

Meghan Markle doesn’t think Samantha Markle betrayed her because they have no relationship

After asking Meghan about her father — the Duchess of Sussex’s father didn’t attend her royal wedding and continues to speak to the press — Oprah asked the 39-year-old about her half-sister’s tell-all book, The Diary of Princess Pushy’s Sister Part 1, that hit shelves in January 2021.

“I think it would be hard to ‘tell all’ when you don’t know me,” Meghan said.

When Oprah used the word “betrayal” to describe the situation, Meghan explained she doesn’t consider her half-sister’s actions a betrayal because they aren’t close.

“This is a very different situation than my dad,” she said. “When you talk about betrayal, betrayal comes from someone that you have a relationship with. The last time I saw her [Samantha Markle] must have been at least 18, 19 years ago, and before then, 10 years before that.”

“I grew up as an only child, which everyone who grew up around me knows,” she added. “I wished I had siblings. I would’ve loved to have had siblings. That’s why I’m so excited to be pregnant so that Archie has someone.”

Also during the interview Meghan and Harry revealed baby no. 2 is a girl expected to arrive in the summer of 2021.

Meghan Markle added that Samantha Markle’s name change ‘says enough’

Meghan also remarked on her half-sister’s name change.

“She changed her last name back to Markle in – I think she was in her early 50s at that time – only when I started dating Harry,” Meghan told Oprah. “So I think that says enough.”

The Duchess of Sussex went on her first date with Harry in July 2016. However, it wasn’t until months later their relationship went public. Once the world found out about it, Meghan’s half-sister began speaking out.

Meanwhile, the majority of Meghan’s friends and family remained quiet. Even today, those closest to Meghan rarely discuss her or Harry publicly. As Meghan noted in her interview, her mother has never given an interview about her, Harry, or the British royal family.
