Meghan Markle Was Inspired by Kate Middleton’s ‘Royal Fashion’ During a Recent Public Appearance
Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle have not exactly remained friends since Meghan joined the royal family back in 2018. Meghan and Kate tried to become close and did find some things in common, however at their core, they were just too different.
Still, both women have succeeded in the fashion world, once being the two most influential women globally in terms of their outfits. And Meghan seemed to take a page out of Kate’s book with the duchess’ recent public appearance in Los Angeles.

As royalty, it’s not always easy to be relatable. Everyone knows the royals are worth billions, so to try and make yourself out to be ordinary isn’t so easy. But Kate had a great way of doing it; she would often re-wear outfits that she’d worn to events in years’ past, and people always took notice when she repeated one.
Meghan recently did the same, though it wasn’t something she was previously known for. At the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles Gala in October 2024, Meghan wore a red Carolina Herrera dress, which she previously wore in 2021 during the Salute to Freedom Gala. The previous event took place in New York, and Meghan attended alongside Prince Harry. For the LA gala, Meghan was riding solo, as Harry was on a brief tour attending charity events in places including New York and South Africa.
Royal commentator Dorothy Reddin wrote for GB News that the move reminded her of Kate’s actions. “This upcycling tactic is a hallmark of Kate’s thrifty approach to royal fashion,” Reddin said. While Meghan likely doesn’t want to be compared to Kate, it’s not a bad comparison to make, given that many people respect Kate’s desire to save certain clothing items.

Meghan and Kate did make an effort to be friends; the two women attended Wimbledon together in both 2018 and 2019, and when Meghan spoke with Oprah Winfrey in 2021, she referred to Kate as a “good person.” However, over the years, the ladies’ husbands have feuded so much that the women never quite had a chance to reconnect once they had a falling out.
To be honest, it’s possible that Meghan and Kate actually could have been friend if they’d been given the chance. Not long after Meghan met Harry, things between Harry and Prince William began to unravel, meaning the two women never got the time to explore whether they could have had a meaningful friendship. Perhaps if Harry and William can ever end their feud, Meghan and Kate might actually be close.
