Meghan Markle reportedly kept journals during her tenure as a royal family member. While these could be the base of a long-rumored memoir, one expert has sounded the alarm over why sharing her life story could further destroy Meghan’s image.

Rumors regarding a Meghan Markle memoir persist

Since the publication of Prince Harry’s Spare in January 2023, Meghan Markle has been under close watch by royal insiders over rumors she too will pen a memoir. The Duchess of Sussex reportedly wrote down details of her life as a senior royal, and these recollections could be the basis of a future book.

Meghan told The Cut she found her journals while packing her things at Frogmore Cottage, her and Harry’s former royal residence. “You go back and you open drawers and you’re like, Oh my gosh. This is what I was writing in my journal there. And here’s all my socks from this time.”

While there doesn’t appear to be a Meghan memoir on the table just yet, royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams believes it may be in her future. He told Express, “In theory, there is no reason why Meghan could not write a memoir.”

He continued, “It would almost certainly sell well, probably very well. But as she knows perfectly well, that would depend on how sensational it was.”

Fitzwilliams concluded, “At present, with two senior royals ill, she would appear uncaring and callous, if she launched further attacks on or caused embarrassment to the royal family. It is also unclear how much she would want to reveal about her own family, she is, bar her mother Doria, estranged from all of them.”

Would it be in Meghan Markle’s best interests to write a memoir?

Richard Fitzwilliams alluded that while interest in a Meghan Markle memoir would likely drive readers to purchase the book, would it be in her best interest to pen an autobiography? With overriding sympathy for the royal family at a peak, Meghan sharing her observations of life in the House of Windsor may not presently be a good idea.

However, even in the future, this project may not sit well. Fitzwilliams alluded to strained relationships within her own family and the House of Windsor as the reason.

Currently, Meghan does not speak to her father, Thomas Markle. They have been estranged since 2018.

Meghan is also on difficult terms with her half-sister, Samantha Markle. Their relationship has been publicly strained, particularly since Meghan’s rise to global fame after marrying Prince Harry.

Samantha has been openly critical of Meghan in the media, accusing her of abandoning their father and distancing herself from the Markle family. She has also disputed some of Meghan’s claims about her upbringing and family dynamics.

Therefore, while there would be a monetary reward for Meghan to write down her life story, would pushback from others and continued public estrangement from her and Prince Harry’s family be worth the cost? Especially seeing the response to allegations made in Harry’s memoir?

King Charles Needs Prince William’s Blessing to Reconcile With Prince Harry

If Meghan Markle intends to publish a memoir, there could be more pushback than she realizes. Prince Harry’s Spare further estranged him from the royal family.

In the book, Harry described a physical altercation with Prince William during an argument about Meghan Markle, claiming William pushed him to the ground. He suggested that William and Kate had shown coldness and a lack of support toward Meghan.

Harry portrayed his father as emotionally distant, recounting moments when King Charles struggled to show warmth or understanding. He accused members of the royal family and their staff of feeding negative stories about him and Meghan to the press to protect the reputations of other senior royals.

The Duke of Sussex described the monarchy as dysfunctional and overly hierarchical, highlighting how “the heir and the spare” narrative negatively shaped his life. Finally, Harry criticized the royal family’s unwillingness to address or confront racism, particularly concerning Meghan.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry reside in California. They are parents to two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
