Meghan Markle Once Compared Herself to a Disney Princess Who ‘Falls in Love With the Prince,’ Loses Her Voice
Meghan Markle, who appeared to live a real-life fairy tale during her dazzling 2018 wedding to Prince Harry, once compared herself to a Disney Princess. She described the character as a woman who “falls in love with the prince” but loses her voice.
Meghan Markle lived a princess life until she didn’t
Meghan Markle became engaged to Prince Harry in 2017, and they married in 2018. Her life was a whirlwind. However, she felt during her brief three-year tenure as a senior royal, she could “lose her voice.”
In Meghan and Harry’s interview with Oprah Winfrey, the American former actor revealed how she lost and found herself after her marriage into the United Kingdom’s royal family. Meghan found similarities in her life to Princess Ariel, of Disney’s The Little Mermaid. The U.S. Sun reprinted the full transcript of the interview.
Meghan began, “It must have been years ago. I was sitting in Nottingham Cottage, and The Little Mermaid came on.”
“Who as an adult really watches The Little Mermaid? But it came on, and I was like, ‘Well, I’m just here all the time, so I may as well watch this.’”
She concluded, “And I went, ‘Oh, my God! She falls in love with the prince, and because of that, she has to lose her voice.’ But by the end, she gets her voice back.”
Meghan said in those early royal days, she was ‘everywhere, but I am nowhere’
In the same interview, Meghan Markle told Oprah Winfrey that she often felt isolated due to the furor surrounding her relationship with Prince Harry. The early days of royal life took a lot of adjustment.
Meghan explained, “I remember so often people within The Firm would say, ‘Well, you can’t do this because it’ll look like that. You can’t. ‘Can I go and have lunch with my friends?’ ‘No, no, no, you’re oversaturated; you’re everywhere; it would be best for you not to go out to lunch with your friends.’ I go, ‘Well, I haven’t left the house in months.'”
She continued, “I mean, there was a day that one of the members of the family she came over, and she said, ‘Why don’t you just lay low for a little while because you are everywhere right now’. And I said, ‘I’ve left the house twice in four months. I’m everywhere, but I am nowhere.'”
The Duchess of Sussex felt caught in the crossfire. She spoke out, saying, “I know there’s an obsession with how things look, but has anyone talked about how it feels? Because right now, I could not feel lonelier.”
There was a level of ‘protection’ Meghan needed, and Harry tried to provide
As Meghan Markle discussed her life as a House of Windsor member in those early days, the duchess revealed she was just looking to be protected. Sadly, Meghan believes the royal family did not do this, despite Prince Harry’s best attempts to provide this comfort.
In fact, Harry started speaking out against his wife’s mistreatment before they even became engaged. He addressed the press directly in late 2017.
Subsequently, that letter was removed from the royal family’s official website. This change was quietly made in December 2023.
However, Meghan still battled an internal war within the royal family. She cited how members of the clan would go on the record and “negate the most ridiculous story for anyone, right? I’m talking about things that are super-artificial and inconsequential.”
But, when it came to a negative narrative that she made Kate Middleton cry over Princess Charlotte’s bridesmaid’s dress, Meghan claimed she wasn’t given the same courtesy. “I think that was the beginning of a real character assassination. And they knew it wasn’t true. And I thought, well, if they’re not going to kill things like that, then what are we going to do?”
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry left their positions as working senior royals behind in March 2020. They live in California with their son, Prince Archie, and daughter, Princess Lilibet.
