Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Must Reportedly Be ‘Very Careful’ About What They Say Because Buckingham Palace Is ‘Watching Very Closely’
Meghan, Duchess of Sussex speaks her mind.
But she’s had to refrain from commenting on certain topics since marrying Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex in 2018. As a full-fledged member of the British royal family, Meghan must follow strict protocol which means no voting or commenting on politics. Although the couple’s standing in the royal family is vastly different than it was in 2018, both Meghan and Harry still have to be cautious about what they say.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry step back from royal life
In a stunning decision, Meghan and Harry decide to step back from life as senior members of the royal family in January 2020. In a statement, they say their intention is to split their time between the U.K. and North America. They also say they intend to become financially independent.
They finish out the final events on their royal calendar while transitioning out of their roles as working royals. At the end of March 2020, Harry and Meghan officially step down.
They have be ‘very careful’ about what they say publicly
Today, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are living in Los Angeles with their 1-year-old son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor. They remain largely out of the public eye save for a few appearances on video calls or doing charity work.
It seems the couple is free of the restrictions that come with being high-ranking royals. However, according to author and royal expert Katie Nicholl, that’s not the case.
Meghan and Harry are currently in a trial period of one year after which they will re-evaluate their situation. They’ll sit down with Queen Elizabeth II and decide whether or not they want to end their royal careers completely.
For now, they have to be very thoughtful about what they say publicly because Buckingham Palace is watching them.
“I think it’s the case of the Palace watching and waiting to see what they’ll do. And they will be watching, and they’ll be watching very closely,” Nicholl told ET per Express. “There is a sense of trepidation about the couple going at making a business alone.”
She continued, saying, “They are testing the water and anything that smacks of cashing in on their royal connections or over-commercialisation is going to meet a very prickly response from the Palace.
“Meghan and Harry are thinking very hard about what they want to do, how they are going to make money,” she added.
How are they going to support themselves? Speaking engagements.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry sign with a talent agency
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will supposedly bring in $1 million dollars for every speaking engagement. Meghan and Harry have reportedly signed with a high-profile talent agency after having to postpone the launch of their new charitable foundation, Archewell.
What they choose to make speeches on is still unknown. But Nicholl says they won’t just sign up for any speaking engagements.
“Public speaking is absolutely going to be one of the key ways for them to make money but I think they are going to be very careful about what they speak publicly about,” she said. “It’s certainly not going to be about life behind palace walls.”
For now, we’ll have to wait and see what Meghan and Harry’s next move is.
