Meghan Markle ‘Put Her Foot in It’ During Royal Slip-Up at Princess Eugenie’s Wedding
Meghan Markle, with Prince Harry, reportedly made a royal slip-up and “put her foot in it” during Princess Eugenie’s wedding reception. A book about Meghan and Prince Harry’s royal family split explains the alleged issue between the Sussex’s and Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson’s daughter.
Princess Eugenie’s 2018 wedding was the setting for Meghan Markle’s major royal gaffe
Dylan Howard and Andy Tillett’s book Royals at War describes in great detail the tumultuous days before Prince Harry and Meghan Markle left their roles as senior royals. This includes a major error made by Meghan Markle, with Prince Harry, on the day of Princess Eugenie’s wedding to Jack Brooksbank.
The Mirror excerpted a passage explaining how Meghan and Harry felt Princess Eugenie’s wedding was the right time to tell the royal family Meghan was pregnant. The book reads, “Meghan put her foot in it when she decided that it would be the ideal moment to announce that she and Harry were expecting their first child.”
‘This was a huge social blunder, even if you were not a royal. Stealing the limelight from Eugenie, who was furious, as was her mother, Sarah,” the passage concluded of the alleged royal tension.
Despite what was called an error in judgement during that happy family event, Harry, Meghan, and Eugenie maintain their close relationship. Harry shared his thoughts regarding the same turn of events, which differed from Royals at War, in his autobiography, Spare.
Prince Harry felt Princess Eugenie’s wedding was a good time to reveal his baby news
In Spare, the Duke of Sussex addressed the day he and Meghan shared their pregnancy news with the royal family during a reception to celebrate Princess Eugenie’s wedding to Jack Brooksbank. People Magazine shared passages from the autobiography.
Harry wrote he and Meghan were “deliriously happy” for Eugenie and Jack, and being close to many royal family members made it easy to share their pregnancy joy, five months after their wedding. He said the event gave the couple “a chance to pull aside family members individually and tell them our good news.”
“At Windsor, just before a drinks reception for the bride and groom, we cornered Pa [King Charles] in his study. He was sitting behind his big desk, which afforded his favorite view, straight down the Long Walk. He was delighted to learn that he was going to be a grandfather for a fourth time; his wide smile warmed me,” Harry continued.
“After the drinks reception in St. George’s Hall, Meg and I pulled Willy aside. We were in a big room, suits of armor on the walls. Strange room, strange moment.”
“We whispered the news, and Willy smiled and said we must tell Kate. She was across the room, talking to [her sister] Pippa. I said we could do it later, but he insisted. So we went and told Kate, and she also gave a big smile and hearty congratulations. They both reacted exactly as I’d hoped — as I’d wished,” the duke concluded.
Prince Harry and Princess Eugenie are close
Prince Harry and Princess Eugenie reportedly always had a close relationship. It was Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank that Harry and Meghan Markle spent much time with before their marriage in May 2018.
Harry and Eugenie have maintained their relationship despite Harry’s estrangement from other senior royals, including King Charles, Kate Middleton, Prince William, and Camilla Parker Bowles. Most importantly, Eugenie was the only royal family member to appear in the Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan. In a short clip, she played with the couple’s son Archie.
Their deep bond was apparent during King Charles’ coronation in May 2023. Harry attended alone without Meghan and sat with Eugenie, Jack, her sister Beatrice, and Beatrice’s husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle reside in California. They are parents to Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
