Meghan Markle Shares Her One Regret With the Royal Family
In a recent interview with Oprah, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, revealed her one regret when it came to being a part of the royal family. Keep reading to find out what it was.
Meghan Markle says she and Prince Harry weren’t ‘protected’ in the royal family
According to Meghan’s interview with Oprah, she didn’t feel like she was protected within the institution in the same way that other royal family members were.
“They were willing to lie to protect other members of the family, but they weren’t willing, to tell the truth, to protect me and my husband,” she said.
And unlike other members of the royal family, Meghan had to face racism and misogyny from the UK Press. The endless harassment was enough to make her suicidal.
“I just didn’t see a solution,” she tells Oprah. “I just didn’t want to be alive anymore. And that was just a very clear and real and frightening constant thought…”
Because of the mental state she was in, Meghan went to the institution to ask for help. Unfortunately, they turned her down because it would be bad for their “image.”
“I went to the institution, and I said that I needed to go somewhere to get help,” Meghan tells Oprah. “I said I’ve never felt this way before, and I need to go somewhere. And I was told that I couldn’t and that it wouldn’t be good for the institution.”
Meghan Markle reveals her one regret with royal life
While sitting down with the talk show host, the Duchess of Sussex was asked if she had any regrets about being a part of the royal family.
According to Meghan, she only had one.
“My regret is believing them when they said I would be protected,” she said. “And I regret believing that. Because I think had I really seen that that wasn’t happening, I would have been able to do more. But I think I wasn’t supposed to see it. I wasn’t supposed to know. And now because we’re actually on the other side, we’ve actually not just survived, but are thriving.”
Meghan Markle confronted Prince Harry about her suicidal thoughts
According to Meghan, she was nervous about telling Harry how hopeless she was feeling. Yet despite her hesitation, she knew it had to be done. If she didn’t tell her husband about the mental state she was in, she claims she would have taken her own life.
She said, “I knew if I didn’t say it, I would just do it. I just didn’t want to be alive anymore.”
“It takes so much courage to admit that you need help,” she continues. “It takes so much courage to voice that. As I said, I was ashamed. I’m supposed to be stronger than that. I don’t want to put more on my husband’s shoulders. He’s already carrying the weight of the world.”
But when she told her husband that she didn’t want to live anymore, Prince Harry knew a change had to be made.
According to the Duke of Sussex, he didn’t want history to repeat itself. (By saying this, he is referring to the tragic life of his mother, Princess Diana.)
Now, they are living in the Santa Barbara area, and claim they are happier than ever.
