The 1 Reason Meghan Markle Thought the Royals Were Belittling Prince Harry Before the Sussex Exit
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle spent just under two years in the royal family before the two decided to step down and seek a new life in the United States. And after the two left, stories came out about what exactly led up to the couple’s decision to separate from the rest of Harry’s relatives.
No one can deny that there were a number of circumstances that caused Harry and Meghan to step back. But Meghan reportedly did not like the way Harry was being treated by the family and thought they were belittling him with his living conditions.

Meghan Markle was dissatisfied with Prince Harry’s home
When Harry and Meghan first lived together, they were living on the grounds of Kensington Palace, in the home Harry had been in for quite a while. However, Nottingham Cottage, where Harry was living, was a small place compared to the way Prince William and Kate Middleton were living, and that didn’t go unnoticed by the Duchess of Sussex.
“Meghan felt it was so small that it must be a reflection of how the royal family were belittling her husband,” royal author Tom Quinn wrote in his book “Yes Ma’am: The Secret Life of Royal Servants,” according to Express. However, Quinn also writes that Harry reportedly didn’t mind his space. “A rather beautiful house in the grounds of a famous palace hardly seemed to Harry the equivalent to being forced to live in a shed at the end of the garden.”
He adds, “But for Meghan things were more complex. She saw Kate and William living just a few yards away in Kensington Palace itself with teams of live-in servants.”
Eventually, Harry and Meghan moved into Frogmore Cottage, where they lived for hardly any time before leaving the royal family altogether. While other issues were at play in their departure, Meghan apparently always felt that Harry was getting the short end of the stick.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle live in a massive Montecito, California mansion
Harry and Meghan have since traded in Frogmore Cottage (after paying back the taxpayer money they used to fund its renovation) for a much larger home in Montecito, California. The two purchased the mansion for more than $14 million back in 2020, and it reportedly has nine bedrooms and 16 bathrooms.
These days, Harry and Meghan are living a far different life than they were prior to leaving the royal family. Meghan just announced her new Netflix show, and Harry is focusing on his charitable affairs. The two have two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, and they don’t seem to regret their decision to move to the US.
