In 2018, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry wed. They tied the knot in St. George’s Chapel within the grounds of Windsor Castle.

After announcing their engagement the previous November, there was great speculation surrounding Harry and Meghan’s wedding. Ultimately, their ceremony was traditional and had several personal touches as well.

Meghan walked down the aisle alone to Harry, with then-Prince Charles meeting her midpoint and escorting her to his son. It was during that time that a wedding demand made by Meghan left Harry spellbound.

Meghan insisted her 16-foot veil represented her transition into the royal family. The national blooms of all 53 Commonwealth countries were embroidered into the lacework. taking over 4,000 hours of handiwork.

“It was important for me, especially now being part of the Royal Family, to have all 53 of the Commonwealth countries incorporated,” Meghan said, as reported by The Mirror. “And I knew it would be a fun surprise for my now husband he didn’t know! He was really over the moon to find that I would make this choice for our day together, and I think the other members of the family had a similar reaction.”

There was another sentimental nod to Prince Harry embroidered into her wedding dress

Meghan Markle also honored her new husband by adding a sentimental touch to another part of her wedding ensemble. Hidden in her dress was a nod to an unforgettable moment they shared.

Meghan’s one-of-a-kind gown, crafted by Clare Waight Keller, artistic director of the fashion house Givenchy, hid a sentimental piece of material. Woven inside the dress was a square from the dress she wore on their first date.

“We basically sewed it into the hem of the wedding dress, so she was the only one that knew that it was there,” Keller said to The Independent. “It was a little blue gingham check. It was the perfect personal memento that was secretly hidden inside the dress.”

Meghan’s dress was estimated to cost over $200K. Shortly after the wedding aired on television, designer knockoffs of the streamlined wedding gown were available for purchase.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle sat down for a BBC interview shortly after announcing their engagement. He spoke of Princess Diana and how he wished his mother was able to meet his fiancée. “They’d be thick as thieves, without question,” Harry said. “I think she would be over the moon, jumping up and down, you know so excited for me, but then, as I said, would have probably been best friends with Meghan.”

Princess Diana’s sister, Lady Jane Fellowes was invited to give a reading of the Song of Solomon during the ceremony. Forget-me-nots, which were the favorite flower of Princess Diana, were part of the decor and included in Meghan’s bouquet.

Harry proposed to Meghan with two diamonds from his mom’s collection, which flanked a center stone sources from Botswana. During the ceremony, the hymn “Guide Me, O Thou Great Redeemer” was sung. The choice is particularly poignant because it was also played at Diana’s funeral in 1997.
