‘It’s a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie’ Almost Had an ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ Inspired Title
The Muppets ring in the holidays with several original comedies, some available on Disney’s television networks and streaming platform. That includes their version of A Christmas Carol and even an original Christmas film where they save the Muppet Theatre.

The Muppets are some of the world’s biggest celebrities, appearing alongside Amy Adams, Josh Groban, Tina Fey, Lady Gaga, and even RuPaul for several productions. They also starred in It’s a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie.
This 2002 musical comedy features Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, The Great Gonzo, and other beloved Muppets. Even years after its release, this Christmas classic plays on Freeform.
The IMDb description reads, “’Twas the night before Christmas and the Muppet Theatre is in danger of being torn down, but with hilarious send-ups of just about every holiday movie ever made, the Muppets discover that what matters most is their love for each other.”
‘It’s a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie’ had an ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ inspired working title
The Muppets love to feature celebrities and pop culture references in their movies and television shows — It’s a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie was no exception. According to TV Tropes, the working title for the film was actually He’s a Wonderful Frog.
This potential Muppets title was a reference to the holiday classic titled It’s a Wonderful Life. This 1946 film told the story of one man who gets his Christmas wish to see what life would be like if he was never born.
However, this wouldn’t be the only time He’s a Wonderful Frog appeared as the title of a Muppets-related project. A season 5 episode of Muppets Babies shared this name, telling the story of life without Kermit. Seasons 1-3 of this animated series is available on Disney’s streaming platform, Disney+.

This wouldn’t be the only holiday production starring the Muppets, as these characters appeared in the 1987 Christmas special, The Muppet Family Christmas. In 1992, the appeared in The Muppet Christmas Carol, which featured original songs and the heartwarming story penned by Charles Dickens.
Thanks to Disney’s streaming platform, fans got even more content featuring Miss Piggy, Kermit, and all of their friends. Disney+ released the series Muppets Now in 2020. Disney+ debuted Muppets Haunted Mansion the following year, inspired by the iconic Walt Disney World and Disneyland theme park attraction.
While The Muppets Christmas Carol is listed on Disney’s subscription service, It’s a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie is not yet available on Disney+. It’s a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie broadcasts periodically on the television network Freeform.
