Meryl Streep and Martin Short have intense chemistry in Only Murders in the Building, and their off-screen behavior points to a potential romance. The actors hit the red carpet with hand-holding and prolonged eye contact, prompting dating speculation. So, are sparks flying between Streep and Short? Here’s what Showbiz Cheat Sheet’s body language expert says.

A body language expert says Meryl Streep and Martin Short gave 3 clues they’re dating

Meryl Streep and Martin Short sparked romance rumors after appearing at Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building Season 4 premiere on Aug. 24, 2024, in Hollywood. Short and Streep have adored working with each other on the show. Short gushed about how he “loves” Streep. So, is there anything romantic going on between them?

Darren Stanton, Showbiz Cheat Sheet’s body language and behavioral expert, says three green flags suggest that Streep and Short have the hots for each other.

“At a recent premiere, we noticed the two of them holding hands …,” Stanton noted. “They had been friends for many, many years, so obviously, they’ve already got a great connection and deep rapport. But the holding of hands in the way that they were doing it tells me there’s potentially more going on than meets the eye.”

Stanton noted that the “second green flag” between Streep and Short was their prolonged eye contact. “We tend to look at somebody else in the eyes between three and five seconds,” the expert explained. “For these two, we see constant eye contact in excess of 10 seconds, which tells me that something called ‘interpersonal attraction’ and deep rapport is definitely present.”

Finally, Short and Streep were gesturing similarly to each other while sitting together, which marks the final clue. “And then we also see the two of them when they sat together, where one makes a gesture, the other one does it too,” Stanton continued. “They seem to have this unconscious, deep connection, which we call ‘pace and lead.'”

Meryl Streep and Martin Short certainly looked like a couple at the Only Murders in the Building premiere in 2024. An insider told Closer Weekly that the actors “knew exactly what they were doing” and used the event to show the world “that they’re falling in love.”

“They knew exactly what they were doing by coming out on stage holding hands,” the source claimed. “It was their way of basically telling everyone that there’s a lot more to their relationship and that they’re falling in love.”

Streep and Short were both single before prompting dating speculation. Streep and her husband of 45 years were discovered to have been separated for six years as of October 2023. Short’s wife died in 2010 from cancer.

“They’re comfortable and natural together,” the insider continued. “No one expected this, least of all them, but something just sparked between them when they worked together.”

Martin Short’s representative says the actor and Meryl Streep are ‘just good friends’

Martin Short’s representative attempted to squash dating rumors in January 2024. Short and Meryl Streep sparked romance rumors while attending the Golden Globes. Short’s rep told People that the actors “are just very good friends, nothing more.”

While Short’s rep claimed no romance, nearly a year has passed since the initial rumors began — and the actors haven’t changed their body language at events to indicate that they’re just friends. Given their recent appearance, they should expect fans to continue to speculate on their possible love connection.
