Method Man Cast in Sanaa Lathan Hip-Hop Movie
As Power Book II: Ghost fans gear up for season 2, they’re ready to rock with Tariq and Method Man as Davis MacLean. But the Wu-Tang Clan emcee has other irons in the acting fire. Not one to sleep on an opportunity to step into a cool role, Method Man is on deck for a new film helmed by Sanaa Lathan.
Method Man cast in ‘On the Come Up’
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Method Man will star in On the Come Up alongside Sanaa Lathan, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and comedian Mike Epps. Production is underway with Lathan acting as director. The film is an adaptation Angie Thomas’ book of the same name. Thomas also authored The Hate U Give.
The story follows a 16-year-old named Bri, a child of a dead underground hip-hop artist who never had the chance to realize his dream. Bri also aspires to be a rapper, but she runs into obstacles at school and home.
Per the book’s description, she’s labeled as a troublemaker, and things get worse after her mom loses her job. Eviction, no food, and other problems plague her family. Bri soon learns all about infamy when her song goes viral, and she’s deemed a “menace” in the media. The book explores her journey through pain and using her voice — despite the odds.
Judging by the book and Lathan’s photo, it’s likely Method Man will play Supreme, the former manager of Bri’s dad.
Lathan makes her directorial feature debut
Though Lathan has been in the acting game for decades, On the Come Up marks her first foray into the feature film directing world. The project falls under the Paramount Players banner.
Lathan is known for her work in Blade, Love & Basketball, Brown Sugar, and The Best Man. More recently, she’s been seen in Succession, The Affair, and Hit & Run. She served as a producer for two other movies she starred in: The Perfect Guy and Nappily Ever After.
Method Man stars next in ‘Power Book II: Ghost’
Method Man is game to stick around on Power Book II as long his character has a case, and the series returns on Nov. 21. This time around, viewers will see Davis MacLean team up with Cooper Saxe, one of the St. Patricks’ longest-running adversaries. Working in a private practice, these two could get into some sketchy situations that put Tariq and his inner circle in jail.
But Redman also joins the show this season. He’s been cast as Theo, Davis’ brother. Theo is part of the reason Davis practices law and has such a tight — sometimes shady — team beside him. What will they get up to together? In an interview with Big Gold Belt Media, Method Man said that viewers will learn Davis’ true agenda in season 2.
While On the Come Up does not have an official release date yet, fans can keep up with production updates and cast photos by following author Angie Thomas on Twitter.
