Michelle Visage has now been a judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race for a decade in addition to being a hit singer and TV personality. Visage is known for her over-the-top personality and her tough-love approach to critiquing the queens who compete on Drag Race. But despite having such a large personality, Visage is a surprisingly small person in real life.

Michelle Visage was a singer for years

In the late 1980s, a young Michelle Visage wanted to break into the music industry as a singer and auditioned for a girl group. The R&B group Seduction released hit songs such as “Two to Make It Right,” which has even been featured as a lip sync song on RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Seduction toured with the likes of Milli Vanilli and other well-known acts at the time. In the early ’90s, Visage joined the dance music group The S.O.U.L. S.Y.S.T.E.M. Their cover of Bill Withers’ classic “Lovely Day,” “It’s Gonna Be a Lovely Day!”, topped the Billboard Dance Club chart in 1993 and appeared in the movie The Bodyguard starring Whitney Houston.

Michelle Visage has been a ‘Drag Race’ judge for nearly a decade

Visage’s friendship with RuPaul dates back three decades in New York City. They were both nightlife fixtures who first met at a party hosted by the legendary Susanne Bartsch. When they crossed paths again a few years later, they knew they were both destined for stardom — and meant to be by each other’s sides for the ride.

Visage was a frequent guest on RuPaul’s VH1 talk show in the mid-’90s, but she wasn’t able to join RuPaul’s Drag Race in its first season due to a contractual conflict at the time. She became a permanent judge starting in season 3 of the show.

In the decade since she joined Drag Race, Visage has joined RuPaul for several seasons of RuPaul’s Drag Race All-Stars, RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, and the soon-to-be-released Drag Race Down Under.
