‘Midnight Mass’ is Mike Flanagan’s favorite project to date

“I’m just going to admit it — Midnight Mass is my favorite project so far,” Flanagan says in a statement about the series. Flanagan says he referred to Midnight Mass as the “best thing [he] never made” around the set.

According to Flanagan, the Netflix limited series is “more than a decade in the making” — one that has been teased in other Flanagan projects like Gerald’s Game and Hush. The story heavily relies on the books in the Bible, which Flanagan had a lot of experience with as a former altar boy.

“[Midnight Mass] is born of the things that scare me the most,” Flanagan continues in his statement. “The ideas that animate my work always scare me — but the ideas at the root of Midnight Mass terrify me to my core.”

‘Midnight Mass’ cast features stars from ‘The Haunting of Hill House’ and ‘Bly Manor’

Flanagan has become known for using the same cast of people in his works on Netflix. The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor casts share a lot of the same actors including Victoria Pedretti, Kate Siegel, and Henry Thomas.

Siegel, Thomas, and several other actors from The Haunting franchise return as characters in Midnight Mass. Thomas reprises his role as a family patriarch. Meanwhile, Siegel plays Erin Greene, a Crockett Island schoolteacher and expecting mother.

Rahul Kohli, who plays Owen in The Haunting of Bly Manor, plays Sheriff Hassan in Midnight Mass. Annabeth Gish, who appears as Clara Dudley in The Haunting of Hill House, plays Sarah Gunning, Crockett Island’s local doctor.

Samantha Sloyan, who appears in The Haunting of Hill House as Leigh Crain, also appears in Midnight Mass. She plays Bev Keane, a critical local who quickly bonds with Father Paul (Hamish Linklater), the town’s new priest. Other notable faces from Hill House and Bly Manor who star in Midnight Mass include Robert Longstreet and Alex Essoe.

Does it tie into ‘The Haunting’ series?

While Midnight Mass shares a similar cast to Flanagan’s other Haunting installments, the seven-episode limited series has nothing to do with its predecessors. “One of the things that defines the Haunting anthology is that both of them are about updating and riffing on existing classic literature,” Flanagan told Entertainment Weekly

Hill House is inspired by Shirley Jackson’s gothic horror novel The Haunting of Hill House. Bly Manor is inspired by Henry James‘ The Turn of the Screw.

Midnight Mass was always so original and important and personal,” Flanagan adds. “It just never felt like it was ever going to be a part of that universe.”

As far as the future of The Haunting franchise, Flanagan says additional seasons “would have to be [done] with the right piece of IP.” In other words, a future season “would have to be [based on] the right ghost-centric story, and it would have to really fit with Bly and Hill House.”
