Mike ‘The Situation’ Sorrentino Got His Nickname From a Random Woman at a Club
Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino has taken on many nicknames throughout the course of his MTV career. The Jersey Shore star has been called almost every “-ion” there is, from “The Blessification” to “The Designation” and “The Mediation.” However, he’ll always be “The Situation” at heart.
During an episode of his podcast, Mike explained what inspired the original nickname he used on MTV’s Jersey Shore. He has one woman in a Jersey nightclub to thank for the title.

During his audition tape for the MTV series, Mike explained a bit of the background regarding his nickname. “My abs are so ripped up it’s called ‘The Situation,'” he told cameras. That nickname would become his public persona on Jersey Shore.

Fans know Mike’s abs are “The Situation,” but not many know about the woman who inspired the nickname. A caller asked where Mike got the famous nickname during the “Do You Love Yourself?” episode of the Here’s the Sitch podcast.
“That was when I was on the come-up,” Mike explained. “I was shredded and I was trying to fitness model. I was celebrating by going out at a Jersey club because I had just signed on to be a model.”
As the Jersey Shore star explained, he “didn’t really get any money” out of the deal. The offer was to model underwear for JCPenney.
“I was hyped as hell for that at that time period, so I went to the club to celebrate. I was walking around probably with no shirt on and a couple walked by me and the female said, ‘Oh my God honey look at that!’ and she pointed at my abs. She was like, ‘Oh my God, that’s a situation!'”
Mike fell in love with the nickname, finding it “really cool.” Eventually, the nickname became Mike’s full-time persona as a reality star. “I will keep it forever because it’s an amazing start to my career and an amazing nickname,” he concluded.

Throughout Jersey Shore’s original run, Mike stuck with the nickname “The Situation.” When the MTV spinoff series Jersey Shore: Family Vacation came about, Mike started getting more playful with his nicknames.
Sorrentino’s nicknames usually adapt to the needs of his roommates. For example, he goes by “The Designation” any time his roommates need a designated representative to get them back to their rooms safely after having too much to drink. When the roommates were divided after the polarizing speech given at Angelina Pivarnick’s wedding to Chris Larangeira, Mike adopted the nickname “The Mediation” in an attempt to bring everyone back together.
“The Inspiration” is another nickname Mike has adopted. It’s one he goes by when he’s inspiring fans to be their best selves.
These days, Mike loves the title “Big Daddy Sitch.” Mike and Lauren’s son Romeo Reign Sorrentino will turn one in May 2021.
