Musician Miley Cyrus experienced a tragic event in 2018 when the Malibu house she shared with then-husband Liam Hemsworth burned to the ground. The artist reflects on that experience and how it affected her music in a note to fans announcing her upcoming album, Plastic Hearts.

Following her 2017 album Younger Now, Cyrus began working on her next album. She revealed that it would consist of three EPs, released over several months, culminating in one LP. Cyrus dropped She Is Coming in May 2019, with the lead single “Mother’s Daughter.”

However, months passed, and the planned second EP, She Is Here, never arrived. Instead, Cyrus dropped the independent single “Slide Away” in August 2019, following her split from Hemsworth. It was a year until she’d release another song, “Midnight Sky.”

She changed the plan after things in her life change drastically

Speaking to Zane Lowe for Apple Music in September 2020, Cyrus explained that after her house burned down and her marriage ended, she shifted gears. “I learned a lot in the last year that don’t make plans because things just constantly change,” she said. “It makes you feel like super stuck to structure and inflexible.”

“I was feeling like it didn’t make sense for me to continue the next two projects,” Cyrus added. “I felt like for my life the way it evolves and constantly changes, the way I change, how public my experiences are, it doesn’t make sense for me to wrap up that body of time in just a few songs.”

Why Miley Cyrus Didn’t Follow Through on Her Original 2020 Album Plans

On October 23, 2020, Cyrus wrote a note to her fans, announcing her Plastic Hearts is available for pre-order. Read it in full below.

If you’re reading this know I f*cking LOVE + APPRECIATE you on the deepest level. I began this album over 2 years ago. Thought I had it figured all out. Not just the record – its songs/sounds but my whole f*cking life. NO ONE checks an ego like life itself.”

Just when I thought the body of work was finished it was ALL erased. Including most of the music’s relevance. Because EVERYTHING had changed. Nature did what I now see as a favor + destroyed what I couldn’t let go of for myself. I lost my house in a fire but found myself in its ashes.

My collaborators still had most of the music that was burned up in journals/computers filled with songs for the EP series I was working on at the time. But it never felt right to release “my story” (each recording being a continual autobiography) with a HUGE chapter missing. If it were a chapter in my book I guess I would call it – “The beginning” which usually means something is over we call it “The End.” But it was far from that.

In triumph + gratitude I present to you my 7th studio record, Plastic Hearts. To be released 11/27/2020. Well that’s “the plan” anyway – Had one of those before…. But seriously — it’s really coming. Think you’ll love it – if you don’t — f*ck you xx MC
