Miley Cyrus and Brandi Carlile performed each other’s songs on New Year’s Eve
The “Party in the USA” singer spent New Year’s Eve 2022 hosting a TV special for a packed crowd of fully vaccinated party-goers in Miami. During the festivities, the star performed two songs with Carlile, a moment Cyrus called “lucky.”
“How lucky am I that I get to ring in 2022 singing one of my favorite songs of all time with one of my favorite artists of all time,” Cyrus rhetorically asked her large crowd mid-performance. She went on to say, “It’s chicks like her that make me want to do what I do.”
Carlile and Cyrus performed the latter’s Hannah Montana era anthem, “The Climb,” which has proven resilient throughout Cyrus’ ever-evolving music career. They also sang Carlile’s 2007 hit single “The Story.”
The special, dubbed Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party, boasted a lineup of other entertainers like Pete Davidson, who served as her co-host. Cyrus’ sister, Noah Cyrus, even joined her to put a spin on Dolly Parton’s famous hit song “Jolene.”
Carlile’s performance included a truncated take on Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” Cyrus and Davidson also performed a duet of Will Smith’s “Miami.”

Cyrus’s New Year’s Eve special garnered a lot of attention for all of the performers involved. Carlile expressed an interest in recording with Cyrus after the artist wowed with her “The Story” performance.
Cyrus posted a clip of her singing a snippet with Carlile on the guitar. She captioned the video, “This is what singing with your SHEro sounds like,” and tagged Carlile. Carlile then retweeted Cyrus’s tweet, captioning it, “I really feel like we should record this… I love you, @mileycyrus. You absolute force.”
Fans on Twitter were immediately on board with the idea, with one urging the duo, saying, “DO IT!! An energy of fire and passion that resonates through the two of you performing.” Another expressed their enthusiasm, writing, “If you both recorded ‘The Climb’ and ‘The Story,’ it would literally make my 2022, and that’s saying something for it only being day 2 of the year.”
