Miley Cyrus On Giving Justin Bieber Advice and Potential ‘Very Special’ Collaboration
What do Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber have in common? Both began their careers as pop stars a little over a decade ago, and have spent much of their teen and young adult years in the limelight. In a new interview, Cyrus details the advice she once gave Bieber and mentions the possibility of a collaboration between the two.
Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber have known each other a long time
In 2010, Cyrus accompanied Bieber on stage at his sold-out Madison Square Garden show for his My World Tour. She sang the song “Overboard” with him, which was later released as part of a collection of remixes. Cyrus then also appeared in the concert film Justin Bieber: Never Say Never documenting this performance.
At the time, Cyrus had been in the industry, while Bieber was newer to it. Over the years, the two have gone in different directions with their careers. Cyrus’ music has taken on more of a rock sound with her music, while Bieber is more R&B. But both have faced many of the same struggles and can likely relate to one another.
She has his wife, Hailey Bieber, on her ‘Bright Minded’ podcast
As far as feuds in the entertainment industry go, Cyrus does her part to remain outside of them. Case in point: She’s friends with both Bieber’s ex (and another former Disney Channel star) Selena Gomez, who she had on her Bright Minded podcast in early 2020. Also on an episode? Bieber’s wife, Hailey Bieber.
Cyrus and Hailey discussed religion, and what led Cyrus to leave the church they grew up in. This isn’t the only time they’ve talked about their childhood together: On a 2018 episode of Carpool Karaoke, Hailey revealed that Cyrus would come over to play with her older sister, Alaia, and they used to “gang up on” her.
Cyrus and Bieber have discussed collaborating
Cyrus and Bieber haven’t put out a song together, aside from the remix. Back in 2013, ahead of her new album Bangerz, they were spotted leaving the studio together. A track, “Twerk,” with the two and rapper Lil Twist, leaked but was never officially released. However, after watching her 2019 Black Mirror episode, a new opportunity came about.
Bieber commented on an Instagram post of Cyrus’, “Hailey and I loved the episode.” She replied, suggesting a collaboration with her in character, “JB FT AO?” And Cyrus told Variety in June 2020 she’s still open to the possibility. “Man, I think we could come up with something very, very, very special. As of now, nothing is in the works.”
She gave him excellent advice
Right now, Bieber is dealing with accusations of sexual assault. Though Cyrus doesn’t comment on that in the interview (which may have been recorded before the allegations made on June 20, 2020), she does recollect a time in which Bieber asked her for some advice.
At the premiere of the concert film in 2011, Bieber came to Cyrus in “a very mellow, friendly way.” She told him, “Just try to remember everything, try to press record in your brain, and remember everything.” She added, “There was so much going, so much to take in as such a young person that I didn’t remember to take everything in.”
