Miley Cyrus’ Song ‘Malibu’ Is A Much Bigger Part of Her and Liam Hemsworth’s Love Story Than You Realize
In 2017, Miley Cyrus released her song “Malibu,” which is about the love she had for her ex-husband, Liam Hemsworth.
Though the track is a tribute to the Hunger Games actor and the love they shared, the song is also about the fondness Cyrus has for the beach town in California, which played an even bigger role in her and Hemsworth’s love story than you might have realized.
Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth rekindled their relationship in Malibu
Cyrus and Hemsworth’s love story began in 2010 after they met on the set of their film The Last Song.
After two years of dating, the couple got engaged. Unfortunately, the pair hit the first serious rough spots in their relationship in 2013 and decided to break off their engagement.
During their split, Hemsworth bought a home in Malibu to try “to get away” from the Hannah Montana star but quickly realized that he wasn’t successful.
“When Liam—he’s my boyfriend now—broke up for a minute, he wanted to get away from me, he wanted to go to Malibu, and bought this house,” Cyrus shared during an interview on The Howard Stern Show (via Women’s Health Magazine) in 2017. “He didn’t know it was the house I recorded my first album [Breakout] in!”
She continued, “The person hid all the plaques in the garage so he would still buy the house. So then he went to move in and he was like ‘F*ck, I cannot get away, this b*tch is all over my f*cking house!'”
Fast-forward to 2016, Hemsworth and Cyrus secretly rekindled their romance, and guess where their reconciliation took place: Malibu.
“They were secretly dating again for months before anyone found out,” an insider told People in 2018. “Liam is very protective of Miley and she feels safest with him. Malibu was their sanctuary and is very special to them. They fell in love again there.”
Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth planned to get married in Malibu
A year after getting back together, Cyrus dropped the song “Malibu,” which details her joy and surprise that she and Hemsworth managed to find each other once more (in, well, Malibu).
“They’re going to talk about me if I come out of a restaurant with Liam,” Cyrus told Billboard of the public’s interest in their romance in 2017. “So why not put the power back in my relationship and say, ‘This is how I feel’?”
She added, “And changing with someone else not changing like that is too hard. Suddenly you’re like, ‘I don’t recognize you anymore.’ We had to refall for each other.”
Now, what makes their love story even more adorable is that Cyrus and Hemsworth had initially planned to tie the knot at their home in Malibu, according to People.
But after the devastating California wildfires burned down their compound in November 2018, the stars exchanged vows inside Cyrus’ home in Franklin, Tennessee.
Miley Cyrus celebrates her song ‘Malibu’s four-year anniversary in 2021
After facing the unthinkable when their Malibu home burned down, Cyrus and Hemsworth seemed closer than ever.
Unfortunately, after less than a year of marriage, the pair called it quits in August 2019, marking the end of their years-long romance.
Since going their separate ways, both Hemsworth and Cyrus have moved on with their lives. But despite her romance with the actor now being in the past, Cyrus still finds herself reminiscing about their relationship.
On May 11, 2021, the “Midnight Sky” singer celebrating the fourth anniversary of “Malibu” while looking back on her love with Hemsworth.
“Today is the 4 year anniversary of Malibu. A song about a place and person that at the time I loved very much,” the Grammy nominee captioned an Instagram video of herself practicing the ballad in 2017. “That love was reciprocated beyond what I could describe here with freedom & escapism. I lost that home along with many others in 2018. Here is a video of me writing it in my home studio.”
Though their relationship is now a thing in the past, it seems that Malibu will forever be close to Cyrus and Hemsworth’s hearts.
