Are Mindy and Danny Still Together After ‘The Mindy Project’?
The Mindy Project may have ended its final run on Hulu back in 2017, but fans are still wondering about Mindy Lahiri (Mindy Kaling) and Danny Castellano’s (Chris Messina) relationship status. The enemies-turned-friends-turned-lovers had a whirlwind romance filled with plenty of ups and downs. So it wouldn’t exactly be surprising if the couple broke up after the series finale. Then recently, Kaling opened up about the relationship and revealed whether Mindy and Danny are still together after The Mindy Project wrapped.
What happened to Mindy and Danny in the series finale of ‘The Mindy Project’?
In The Mindy Project series finale, Mindy found her happily ever after with Danny. The couple previously got engaged and had a child named Leo together. However, they split when Mindy realized Danny wanted her to give up her career to become a stay-at-home mom.
For the next few seasons, Danny and Mindy hooked up sporadically before deciding to solely become co-parents to Leo. But by the end of the series, Mindy discovered Danny changed. He backed Mindy when her fertility clinic was going under. Danny also applauded his ex for being able to raise Leo while running her business.
Then at the end of The Mindy Project Season 6, Mindy rushed to Danny in an attempt to confess her love to him. But once she got there, Danny didn’t understand what was going on. So Mindy backed out without a proper confession. Luckily, Danny’s mom, Annette (Rhea Perlman) was there to witness the whole thing. So she slapped some sense into her son.
Finally, Danny tracked down Mindy. And surprise, surprise — she was in the break room with her arm stuck in the vending machine. Danny asked Mindy whether she was going to say she loved him again. Then Mindy admitted she never stopped loving him. They sat down on the couch, echoing the final scene of The Mindy Project pilot episode.
Mindy Kaling reveals whether Mindy and Danny are still together in 2020
When The Mindy Project ended in November 2017, Kaling opened up about the decision to make Mindy and Danny endgame during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. However, the show creator noted Mindy and Danny may not last forever. At the time, Kaling said:
I think what it ends up coming down to is there is history and chemistry. I think we as viewers and as writers want to see two people work things out or try to work things out if there is real evidence of pure and unequivocal love. The great thing about the end of the show is it doesn’t necessarily mean forever.
We know that these two characters are going to have to really work to stay together. Right now, Matt and I were just in a place, and Chris as an actor — we were all in a place where we thought that’s an adventure that we’d really like to see her take rather than have her meet a new guy or be single at the end of the series. We just thought, “OK, they have great chemistry, they have a child and you want to see them try to make it work.”
Then on April 27, TVLine released an interview with Kaling to discuss her latest show on Netflix, Never Have I Ever. Then Kaling offered an update on Mindy and Danny, confirming the couple is still together.
“I am kind of a skeptical, cynical person, in general. So, I always feel like everybody breaks up,” Kaling said. “But I will say that, and especially a couple as tumultuous as them… But you think that Danny is old-fashioned enough, that when they have kids — and they probably had another kid — that they would just try to make it work.”
She continued: “I think they kind of drive each other crazy. But they have a great chemistry, and they push each other’s buttons, both way positive and negative. So, yeah. I’m going to say they’d be together.”
