‘Miss Scarlet and The Duke’: PBS Shares Big Season 2 Update

London’s first-ever lady detective is back. Miss Scarlet and The Duke Season 2 will premiere in fall 2022 on PBS, the network has announced. 

‘Miss Scarlet and The Duke’ Season 2 sets fall 2022 premiere date 

Miss Scarlet and The Duke premiered in January 2021. PBS renewed the period mystery series last March. At the time, the network said that the new episodes would air sometime in 2022. Now, fans have a better idea of when they might actually see the new season. While a specific premiere date hasn’t been announced, Miss Scarlet and The Duke Season 2 will air someone next fall.   

“She’s back and ready to solve crime along with her trusted friend (and sometimes partner)! #MissScarletPBS will be back on MASTERPIECE Mystery! this fall,” Masterpiece PBS announced in an April 21 tweet. 

Series star Kate Phillips says the new season will have ‘the same Duke and Eliza dynamic’

Miss Scarlet and The Duke stars Peaky Blinders alum Kate Phillips as Eliza Scarlet. She’s the daughter of a private investigator who decides to take over his detective agency after his unexpected death. Stuart Martin plays William “The Duke” Wellington, a police detective and former protégé of Eliza’s father. He reluctantly provides help on some of Eliza’s cases.

Season 1 ended with Eliza learning the truth about her father’s murder and William realizing that his colleague Frank was a crook involved in a counterfeiting ring. Season 2 picks up some time after those events, and according to Phillips, “it’s like no time has passed at all.”  

“We’ve slipped right back into the same old Duke and Eliza dynamic,” she told PBS. “If anything, it feels richer and more playful than ever.”

As for Martin, he says he’s “beyond delighted to be back in Duke’s bowler hat and boots, swaggering the streets of London by Kate’s side.” 

“I can’t wait for … fans to see where Eliza and Duke go next, and who they bump into on the way,” he added. 

Will there be a William-Eliza romance in ‘Miss Scarlet and The Duke’ Season 2? 

Eliza and William will surely find themselves investigating more murders in Miss Scarlet and The Duke’s second season. But what about their love-hate relationship? There’s plenty of sexual tension between the two detectives, but series creator Rachael New isn’t saying whether their friendship takes a romantic turn in future episodes, though it sounds like a definite possibility. 

“I’m a romantic at heart,” New told IndieWire in a May 2021 interview. “I’d like to think they’re in love with each other … but she [Eliza] is not ready to settle down. She’d make a terrible wife!”
